A Toys McCoy A-2 cut in horsehide to WWII Army Air Forces specification and painted on the back with a Marilyn Monroe-inspired figure beneath the words “Anything Goes.” Believed to be one of seventy, it joins Japanese reproduction craft to American screen iconography, its leather only beginning to take on patina.
The Piece
Toys McCoy, the Japanese heritage reproduction house, built this A-2 in accordance with WWII U.S. Army Air Forces specifications, working from wartime reference patterns, and cut it in horsehide: a dense, oil-rich, slow-aging hide typical of the maker's production philosophy. It belongs to the late 20th to early 21st century period of Japanese reproduction.
The reverse panel is hand-painted with a Marilyn Monroe-inspired pin-up beneath the inscription “Anything Goes.” Behind her, a radiating color field forms a halo-style composition that lifts the figure beyond traditional nose art into a balanced, highly legible design. The painting follows the grammar of WWII nose art, executed with cleaner line control, a more balanced composition and deliberate color symmetry.
The figure draws on the same iconography that informed original nose art: postwar American femininity and Hollywood's export culture. Set on the A-2's military frame, it places the jacket where American WWII aviation identity, postwar Hollywood mythology and Japanese reproduction craft meet, so that it reads equally as militaria, fashion, art object and cultural collectible.
The horsehide is still in early maturity: creases are forming rather than collapsing, the grain is beginning to rise and oil distribution remains active. A well-aged horsehide A-2 does not peak early, and this example has its patina still ahead of it. Believed to have been produced in a limited run of seventy, it is a reproduction that has begun to carry a collectible identity of its own.
