An old-period Real McCoy’s A-2 on a Monarch Mfg. Co. contract body, its back painted with a “Blow and Go” mural of pilot portrait and P-51 Mustang, its chest answered by a Bugs Bunny-style nose-art patch and a “G. Yeager” name strip. History, humor and heroism meet in one horsehide jacket.
The Piece
A visually compelling and culturally layered A-2 from the old Real McCoy’s period, executed on a Monarch Mfg. Co. contract-style horsehide body (AC Order W535-AC-23378) and distinguished by an expansive painted back panel titled “Blow and Go”. The contract reproduction already carries legitimate structural lineage; the full aviation mural moves the jacket into another category, a story rendered in horsehide.
The back composition sets a calm, grounded, almost cinematic pilot portrait against a clouded battlefield sky, anchoring the scene, while a P-51 Mustang, angled in motion rather than static, gives it kinetic energy. American and Japanese visual language coexist in a USA/Japan insignia fusion motif, almost a cultural handshake disguised as conflict, and a winged insignia with target emblem bridges military authority and graphic precision. Above it all, “Blow and Go” reads like a wartime slogan carried across decades.
The front changes register. A Bugs Bunny nose-art style chest patch and a name strip reading “G. Yeager” echo the personalized aircraft markings pilots applied to their machines, and recall the irreverence, cartoons and humor of WWII aircrew culture. The tone shifts from heroic to human, from historical to personal; this duality, WWII aviation mythology interpreted through Japanese reproduction culture with a postwar pop icon infused, is central to the jacket’s appeal.
Construction follows the classic A-2 silhouette, with dual flap pockets, knit cuffs and waist, and period-correct label execution. The horsehide is a warm russet to mid-brown with a natural gloss patina: a soft sheen that catches light like bronze, subtle grain variation across panels and natural creasing that feels earned. Neither stiff nor broken down, it sits where structure, age and flexibility give visual depth.
Old Real McCoy’s studied military contracts with near-archaeological care, and pieces such as this belong to a second wave of A-2 culture in which historical fidelity meets artistic reinterpretation and American wartime mythology is filtered through Japanese craftsmanship. It speaks to McCoy’s collectors drawn by the old label and Monarch contract, aviation enthusiasts drawn by Mustang, pilot and slogan, art jacket collectors drawn by a full back mural with front nose art, and archive fashion collectors seeking a wearable statement; size 36 also suits display and Japanese archive sizing.
