Silver dragons emerge from midnight-navy velveteen like metalwork under low light. This Vacation Paradise sukajan carries its dragons across chest, sleeves and back, and a seven-digit Tokyo telephone number on its label places it before 1991.
The Piece
Densely embroidered in silver and bronze, this vintage Vacation Paradise sukajan is built around a restrained palette rather than bright multicolor thread. Two roaring dragon heads face each other across the front, their open jaws, whiskers and layered scales in pale silver with warm bronze detailing. Full-bodied dragons climb both sleeves from cuff to shoulder, giving the jacket an unusually complete embroidered presence from every angle, and the back carries the principal composition: a large airborne dragon among stylized clouds and movement lines, framed by the embroidered words “Japan” in script and “Tokyo” in block capitals. Warm beige rib-knit trim softens the dark body, and a silver satin lining keeps the clean simplicity of a classic souvenir bomber.
Midnight navy, silver, bronze and muted beige make a mature alternative to the vivid red, green and gold palettes of many souvenir jackets; the embroidery stays dramatic while the subdued tones keep the jacket remarkably wearable. From the front the paired heads create symmetry, from the side the sleeve dragons dominate, and from the back the Japan and Tokyo composition becomes a complete vintage souvenir emblem.
The Japanese dragon, ryū, stands for strength, authority, transformation and protective energy. Unlike the winged dragons of much Western imagery, it moves through clouds, air and water with a long serpentine body, a movement the jacket expresses in curling limbs, flowing whiskers and repeated cloud forms. The references to Japan and Tokyo place the garment within the souvenir-jacket tradition, in which place names turned outerwear into personal records of travel, nightlife and cultural identity.
The velveteen shell, subdued embroidery palette, generously cut raglan sleeves and rock-and-roll themed label align with Japanese revival and youth-fashion production of the 1980s, the most plausible date. The label's seven-digit Tokyo telephone number gives particularly useful evidence: NTT records show that the Tokyo 03 region changed all local exchange numbers to four digits on January 1, 1991, supporting a pre-1991 date.
