The Piece

An exceptionally uncommon Karl Helmut × Disney reversible jacket created for the Japanese label's twentieth-anniversary period. One side is a washed indigo-blue bomber with varsity details and a large embroidered Mickey Mouse seen from behind in a sailor outfit, beneath red and ivory lettering that reads “We have fun together all the time! There are no pals like old pals…”. Its front is restrained: an oversized appliqué letter K embroidered with Karl Helmut, Disney and “Blame It on My Youth” anniversary details, finished with cream-and-blue striped ribbing in a softly aged collegiate mood.

Reversed, the jacket becomes a silver-gray quilted piece. Mickey portraits decorate the chest, red arrow-shaped pocket trim and anniversary embroidery run across the front and sleeve, and the silver back carries the centerpiece: Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck within a Japanese seascape inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's Great Wave, with foaming water, cranes, nautical signal flags and the embroidered word “Japan.” The quilted satin behaves like a padded picture scroll, carrying the characters through waves and maritime flags.
