A flock of golden eagles crosses black velvet on one face; the other charts Japan in quilted satin, with a gold-outlined map, dozens of embroidered city names and a prowling tiger. This Pink House–era Karl Helmut sukajan reads like a wearable travel diary in velvet, satin and thread.
The Piece
A remarkable vintage Karl Helmut sukajan that transforms from nocturnal black velvet embroidered with golden eagles into a quilted satin souvenir jacket charting Japan through city names, a gold-outlined map and a tiger. It is not a conventional reversible bomber with one exterior and a plain lining: both faces are fully composed, each with its own textile, embroidery system and palette. Karl Helmut, the menswear-oriented label within the Pink House brand family, brings together amekaji, the souvenir-jacket tradition, maximalist designer fashion and a playful narrative sensibility; it continues to be presented through the official Pink House store alongside Pink House and Ingeborg.
The velvet face uses a deep black pile that absorbs light, so the embroidery seems to hover above it, the surface shifting between jet black, charcoal and soft graphite as the pile changes direction. A large central eagle crosses the back with wings extended, tail spread and talons lowered, while smaller birds descend from the shoulders and circle the lower back in a deliberately asymmetrical, almost cinematic flight. The birds are built in warm gold, pale champagne, cream, honey yellow, bronze brown and muted tan with small red accents, long directional stitches for flight feathers, shorter dense stitches for body and neck. Golden feathers, several tied with small red cords, fall across sleeves and back; the Karl Helmut name runs across the upper back in loose white script, with a smaller signature near a chest eagle. The front is restrained, with two mirrored gold eagles and discreet black welt pockets, while the sleeves carry birds and feathers almost from shoulder to cuff. The rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband stay predominantly black.
Reversed, the black body is diamond quilted, and antique-gold sleeves carry black racing stripes edged in narrow red piping, recalling vintage athletic and racing jackets; the ribbing turns to red, white and green stripes. Two stylized yellow-and-black tigers stand on embroidered green grass on either side of the zipper, one chest bearing the red Karl Helmut signature. The back is organized around a gold-thread map of the Japanese archipelago with red location dots, surrounded by dozens of embroidered place names, while a large tiger, alert with one paw raised, occupies the lower right above green grass, and a green handwritten Japan inscription sweeps across the lower center.
Map designs are central to souvenir-jacket history. In the early postwar period, American servicemen in the Pacific had jackets embroidered with base names, unit references and Asian motifs as personal mementos, later sold through military retail networks. Karl Helmut reinterprets that language as a dense national itinerary, something between a travel poster, a railway timetable and an embroidered atlas. The eagle speaks of freedom, vigilance and movement and ties the jacket to American military, collegiate and sportswear imagery; the tiger, one of the most recognizable sukajan motifs, of strength, courage and protection, its exaggerated stripes and curved back echoing the naïve charm of early souvenir embroidery. This is amekaji at its most characterful: American forms filtered through Japanese craftsmanship, collecting culture and humor.

Condition
- Good vintage condition with visible age-related character.
- Natural signs include gentle surface wear, minor fading and tonal variation, compression and directional changes in the velvet pile, light lint or fibers visible against the black surface, creasing and wrinkling to the quilted satin, slight puckering around dense embroidery, mild wear to rib-knit areas, possible small marks, scuffs or isolated thread movement, and age-related variation in the gold and black textiles.
- A matching example of this design recorded in Japan was used, with some wear, fading, minor marks and age-related imperfections.
- The central eagle, sleeve birds, feathers, city names, Japan map and tiger remain strong and visually complete; no large tear or major missing embroidery is apparent in the photographs, which form part of the condition record.
