Tailor Toyo's Fall 2007 “Maiko × Chief” sets two embroidered worlds back to back: a feather-headdressed rider on a red motorcycle on teal and champagne gold, and a maiko beneath her parasol beside a vermilion bridge and Mount Fuji on navy and pearl ivory.
The Piece
This fully reversible, unpadded satin sukajan is the archived Tailor Toyo model TT11381-119, officially named “Maiko × Chief” (舞妓×CHIEF) and released for Fall 2007. Every principal design is embroidered and both faces are complete exteriors; the original product documentation stressed that there is no meaningful distinction between outer face and lining. One side rides through American motorcycle mythology, the other steps into an embroidered Japan of Fuji, silk kimono, ornamental bridges and drifting clouds: a dragon faces a motorcycle chief, tiger heads guard a maiko, and champagne satin turns to pearl ivory with one movement of the zipper.
The teal-green back is dominated by the word “Chief” in tall ivory lettering across the shoulders. Below, a stylized rider sits upright on a red vintage-style motorcycle, wearing a feathered headdress with pale feathers, dark tips and turquoise and red detailing, a yellow shirt, brown trousers and boots. The machine is rendered in real pictorial detail: deep red tank and fenders, silver engine components, dark wheels with embroidered spokes, a long front fork, sweeping exhaust, brown saddle, pale handlebars and “Indian” script on the tank. The design appears inspired by the visual identity of Indian Motorcycle and its historic Chief model, but it is documented as a Tailor Toyo Chief design rather than a separately identified brand collaboration. On the front, a dragon head with silver whiskers, turquoise horns, golden features and an open red mouth rises above small yellow, blue, red and pink cloud forms on one chest, facing the matching Chief portrait above flowing gold embroidery on the other. The champagne-gold sleeves, bordered by narrow teal inserts running from the collar over the raglan shoulder and down the outer arm, shift between pale gold, cream, warm beige and soft bronze; cream ribbing with burgundy stripes finishes collar, cuffs and waistband.
The reverse renders Japan through the classic souvenir-jacket imagination. “Japan” runs in large flowing script, with metallic silver lettering, across the upper back, and Mount Fuji rises at upper left in pale ivory and icy blue, partly veiled by clouds. At right a maiko stands in formal profile in an ornate red kimono patterned with pale blossoms, her obi and trailing back panel in turquoise with floral embroidery, one hand extended while the other supports an open parasol in peach, ivory, red and black. Below run a vermilion bridge and posts, turquoise water, white cloud forms and a stylized floral roundel. The official model name identifies the figure as a maiko, linking the scene to Kyoto's traditional performing arts rather than a generic portrait. Two roaring tiger heads in gold, black, ivory, grey and red, with open jaws and exaggerated circular eyes, guard the chest in mirrored symmetry, so from the front the jacket reads as a bold animal sukajan until the wearer turns. Pearl-ivory sleeves with dark navy shoulder and outer-arm inserts complete the face.
Both faces share cream, burgundy and dark striped ribbing, quietly linking the two color systems. Worn partly open, the compositions overlap at the center: the Chief rider appears behind the tiger heads, fragments of the maiko landscape beneath the dragon-and-Chief front. The rider and the maiko become parallel figures, both in profile, both in highly recognizable ceremonial dress, both in carefully staged settings; one rides through motorcycle Americana, the other stands within an embroidered Japan.
Tailor Toyo is Toyo Enterprise's specialist souvenir-jacket label and has continued the sukajan tradition for more than half a century, respected for its research into historic embroidery, color combinations, labels, reversible construction and tour-jacket imagery. TT11381 belongs to the brand's 2000s archive period, when Japanese landscapes were regularly combined with unusual Americana, military, tattoo and motorcycle subjects. It is a Japanese revival piece, not an original 1940s or 1950s serviceman-commissioned jacket; now approaching twenty years of age, the model is increasingly difficult to find with both faces visually complete.

- Gentle softening around collar, cuffs and waistband, with minor fuzzing and age-related texture in the rib-knit trim.

- No major open tear, severe rib loss or large missing embroidered area is apparent in the photographed sections.
Fit & Wear
Tailor Toyo sukajan of this era combine raglan shoulders, a compact body, a gathered waistband and moderate chest room; actual garment measurements are a better guide than general Western size conversion.
Unpadded, the jacket is light and fluid, best suited to spring, autumn, mild winter or indoor wear rather than severe cold. The teal-and-gold face is warmer and more eccentric, at home with raw indigo denim, engineer or motorcycle boots and Japanese biker or rockabilly dress; the navy-and-ivory face is cooler and sharper, suiting wide black trousers, cream chinos, minimal knitwear and wagara layers.
