An early M-number Tailor Toyo sukajan in which Japanese mythology and Hawaiian travel imagery share one garment. A hula dancer glows beneath Honolulu lettering on dark velveteen, dragons climb both sleeves, and the reverse opens into a quilted satin map of the islands, so neither face reads as secondary.
The Piece
This rare early Tailor Toyo M-number reversible sukajan combines Japanese souvenir-jacket craftsmanship with richly embroidered Hawaiian travel imagery. The exact combination of hula dancer, Honolulu lettering, sleeve dragons, palm-tree chest embroidery and quilted Hawaii map reverse is documented in Japan as the early Tailor Toyo M18279 model. Tailor Toyo, the line of Toyo Enterprise, has produced souvenir jackets for more than half a century and specializes in reviving the materials, motifs and construction of postwar sukajan.
The primary face is cut in deep chocolate-brown velveteen whose short pile shifts between espresso, black-brown and muted plum with the direction of the light. Across the upper back, “Honolulu” is written in flowing ivory script; beneath it a dancer in a green grass skirt and pink lei raises her arms in a rhythmic pose before a low volcanic island, dark water, shoreline and stylized clouds, and the word “Hawaii” completes the composition. She is rendered with stylized features, waved hair, a flower and lei, pale garments and a layered skirt whose long radiating stitches change direction to suggest movement, with small pink details at the wrists, ankles and neckline. Rather than a small emblem, she occupies the central axis of the back, turning the garment into a full Hawaiian scene that recalls a mid-century travel postcard, kept from novelty by the near-black ground. Hula imagery belongs to the broader history of regional souvenir embroidery: Web Japan illustrates a Honolulu souvenir jacket with a dancing hula girl from the Tailor Toyo collection.
Each velveteen sleeve carries an elongated dragon among tightly curled clouds, embroidered predominantly in ivory and silver-grey with gold claws, red mouths and small yellow details, rising from cuff to shoulder in dense overlapping stitches that build scales, claws and facial contours. They supply the Japanese counterpoint, acting almost as guardians around the island scene and keeping the jacket active even in profile. The front is restrained: mirrored tropical islands above the pockets, each with a tall palm, low greenery, cloud lines and a reflection, worked in green, cream, gold and pale pink. Zipped, the two palms face one another; worn open, each becomes its own chest emblem. The black-trimmed angled pockets nearly disappear into the pile.
Reversed, the jacket turns to luminous satin: a chocolate-brown body and antique-gold raglan sleeves crossed by large diamond quilting in pale thread, which secures the padding while recreating the look of early insulated souvenir jackets. High on the back, “Aloha” in golden script mirrors the Honolulu lettering of the other face (one side names the city and islands, the other offers their greeting) above a stylized map of the archipelago, each island outlined and labelled in turquoise, pink, green, ivory and gold: Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii. The islands float diagonally like a decorative constellation among clusters of palms in muted green, cream, gold and brown and white cloud outlines, and at the lower center a small outrigger canoe carries several embroidered figures across stylized waves. Thinner outline embroidery lets the quilting remain part of the design. The quilted front carries a Hawaiian royal-style crest with red canopy, gold ornament and shield-like central forms on one chest, and a tall Honolulu tower among palms with the word “ALOHA” on the other; the angled pockets are trimmed in matching antique-gold satin.
The palette is unusually sophisticated for a tropical souvenir jacket: dark brown, ivory and muted green with restrained pink, red and gold on the velveteen face; bronze-brown and antique mustard gold with sparks of turquoise and pink on the satin. In changing light it reads as dark espresso and silver, black-brown and pale green, bronze and antique gold, muted plum and champagne, or chocolate and tropical turquoise. From a distance it is a rich brown bomber; up close, an embroidered travel diary. The Hawaiian subject is considerably less common than Tailor Toyo’s standard tiger, eagle, dragon and Japan-map designs, and the piece sits where several collecting fields meet: early M-number production, vintage Japanese sukajan, Hawaii souvenir fashion and hula imagery, dragon sleeves, velveteen and quilted satin bombers, Japanese Americana, Amekaji and 1990s Japanese archive clothing.

Fit & Sizing Guidance
Measurements may vary slightly depending on how the padded garment is positioned. They are closely consistent with documented Japanese size M examples of the same M18279 model, which commonly measure approximately 54–57 cm across the chest and 55–57 cm in body length.
The silhouette is compact vintage sukajan: rounded raglan shoulders, moderately full sleeves, a lightly padded body, shorter bomber length, gathered cuffs and waistband, and a relaxed chest with a fitted hem. It is likely to suit approximately a contemporary Western unisex Small to fitted Medium, depending on build, layering and preferred silhouette; compare the measurements with a similar jacket that fits well.
Styling Notes
The Hawaiian theme gives the jacket a softer, more playful character than a conventional tiger or eagle sukajan, while the sleeve dragons preserve its Japanese identity.
- Velveteen face: black denim, wide dark trousers, engineer boots, brown leather, Western shirts, cream knitwear, vintage Hawaiian shirts, silver jewelry, rockabilly styling, Japanese Americana and classic Amekaji outfits
- Quilted brown-and-gold face: faded indigo denim, white T-shirts, khaki chinos, canvas sneakers, loafers, workwear trousers, resort-inspired layers, vintage sportswear and earth-tone streetwear
Display Appeal
Shown on the velveteen face, the jacket resembles an embroidered Honolulu travel poster framed by two dragons; on the satin face it becomes a quilted map of the islands with palms, canoe and golden lettering. Because the interior is a second finished artwork, either side suits a display of Japanese souvenir jackets, vintage Hawaiian clothing, postwar travel memorabilia, embroidered bombers, Toyo Enterprise fashion, Japanese Americana or mid-century-inspired resort design.
Authenticity & Care
The motif combination of this jacket is documented in Japan as the early Tailor Toyo M18279 model. No claim of silk is made for the satin; this is a Japanese revival of mid-century souvenir-jacket imagery, not an original 1950s jacket. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
