Karakuri Tamashii: Wagara Worn Loud
Karakuri Tamashii is one of the best-known names in wagara clothing, the genre that takes the pattern vocabulary of the kimono and the folk tradition and applies it to modern garments. Dragons, tigers, koi, waves, hannya masks and phoenixes cover its denim, jerseys and jackets in dense embroidery and print.
The appeal is graphic and cultural at once. Each motif has a meaning, and the way the pattern is placed on the garment, across the back, down a sleeve or around a leg, is part of the design. Embroidery weight and thread condition are the first things to check, so we photograph backs, hems and stitched areas closely.
Sizing on Japanese denim and jersey pieces often runs smaller than Western labels; each description carries measured dimensions in centimetres.
