Enma Daiō, ruler and judge of the Japanese underworld, rises through blue spectral forms as a roaring dragon coils behind him on crimson satin. Turn this Karakuri Tamashii Iki sukajan inside out and the same mythic world returns as champagne-silver line art on midnight navy.
The Piece
A spectacular Karakuri Tamashii Iki reversible sukajan transformed into a densely embroidered vision of the Japanese underworld. The principal face pairs luminous crimson-magenta satin with deep black sleeves and a full-scale composition of Enma Daiō, a roaring dragon, oni-like beings, skeletal blue forms, curling clouds and a crescent moon. This is maximalist wearable art, an almost uninterrupted field of embroidery across front and back, while remaining fully reversible.
Enma emerges through a forest of blue spectral forms, his red face framed by a heavy black beard and ceremonial headwear, while the dragon behind him opens its mouth to bare its fangs and cloud scrolls gather across the crimson sky. The figure is consistent with Enma Daiō, the Japanese Buddhist ruler and judge of the dead, who presides over the moral judgment of souls and appears throughout temple art, folklore and popular culture. Here he is not seated in judgment but placed inside a turbulent supernatural battle of monstrous figures, tangled limbs and weapons, so the image reads as a theatrical vision of hell, judgment and supernatural power.
The dragon's elongated golden-bronze head rises from the lower composition with layered scales and horns, ivory fangs, a wide crimson mouth, curving whiskers, intensely embroidered eyes and interlocking sections of gold, burgundy, black and violet thread. In Japanese visual culture the dragon may signify elemental force, transformation, authority, protection and mastery over water or weather; here it may be guardian, adversary or the chaotic energy of Enma's domain, and that ambiguity gives the scene its strength. Around Enma, pale electric-blue attendants, skeletal bodies, claws and horned heads interlock into an almost architectural mass, a supernatural army evoking jigoku, the Buddhist underworld.
On the crimson face, ivory clouds form a canopy across the upper back above Enma with sword, the snarling dragon, blue spectral and demonic figures, horned attendants, layered armor and robes, and a small embroidered maker-style seal. The front continues as one composition across the zipper: a red-faced central figure with black-and-white hair, ceremonial armor, a horizontally held weapon or staff, blue spectral hands, deep green garment panels, burgundy, bronze and black thread fields and a crescent moon among clouds. Black-and-magenta striped ribbing frames the collar, cuffs and waistband. Different stitch directions distinguish scales, skin, beard, armor, robes, clouds and skeletal forms, dark outlines keep overlapping figures legible, and the comparatively open line embroidery of the clouds counterbalances the dense lower scene.
The reverse shifts from blazing color to shadowy line art: champagne-silver figures, printed or woven across a midnight-navy ground, render dragons, Enma, oni, armor, clouds and weapons as a continuous pattern over body and sleeves, with the front showing overlapping faces and the back a central grouping of dragon and Enma. Black and dark-blue outlines, navy-and-cream striped ribbing, dark pocket trim and a silver-tone reversible zipper complete a colder, more graphic face, closer to a monochrome graphic novel than a souvenir jacket. The Iki designation is associated with the label's most ambitious pieces, and the combination of Enma, dragon and a fully illustrated reverse sets this jacket apart from the more frequently seen tiger, koi and eagle designs. Its LL sizing is particularly attractive for international collectors, as many Japanese souvenir jackets are encountered only in smaller domestic sizes, and it stands as a fine example of the amekaji tradition, in which Western bomber forms are transformed through Japanese narrative imagery.

- The embroidered artwork remains vivid, complete and visually powerful; the crimson-magenta satin keeps a strong reflective finish and the reverse illustration remains clear and sharply defined.
- Visible pre-owned characteristics may include natural satin creasing, light surface rippling, minor thread irregularities, gentle wear to the rib-knit trim, normal puckering around dense embroidery, light storage or handling marks and subtle tonal variation under bright light.
- No major tear, extensive staining, large missing embroidery section or serious structural failure is apparent in the photographs; the zipper, pockets, labels, cuffs, collar and waistband appear present and intact.
Fit Guidance
Because the jacket uses raglan sleeves, a conventional shoulder measurement does not apply. Japanese sukajan typically have a shorter body and more compact silhouette than Western outerwear; compare the measurements with a similar jacket that fits comfortably.
- A Western Medium for a relaxed fit
- A Western Large for a closer classic sukajan fit
- A smaller wearer seeking an oversized silhouette
Preservation Notes
Professional specialist cleaning is recommended. Avoid machine washing, soaking, bleaching or tumble drying, and do not iron directly over the embroidery, printed artwork, ribbing or satin. Store on a broad padded hanger or folded with acid-free tissue, away from prolonged sunlight, excess humidity and rough surfaces that could catch threads, and let the jacket air naturally after wear.
