Unworn with tags: the Y-3 autumn/winter 2014 convertible puffer, article M38089, a PrimaLoft jacket that becomes a vest, a shell or an all-black jacket, complete with its detachable gloves.
The Piece
Y-3 at its best treats sportswear as an engineering problem. This jacket, carried on the tag as M38089 M CONVRTBL BLSN and attributed to autumn/winter 2014, is one of the label's most ingenious answers, and it appeared on the runway that season.
It works five ways. Detach the sleeves and it becomes a padded vest; remove the PrimaLoft insulation and the vest becomes a light nylon shell; the sleeves end in removable mitt-like gloves; and every padded panel can be turned to its plain side for an all-black jacket with no stripes showing. In its full form the black nylon is crossed by broken, translucent three-stripe bands in grey mesh that scatter across the chest, back and sleeves at angles, a deconstructed take on the adidas signature.
PrimaLoft insulation keeps it warm, light and quick to dry. It has a stand collar, a two-way zip under a snap placket, drawcords at the hem and two interior pockets. Size M measures 59 cm across the chest; Y-3 runs about one size larger than Japanese sizing.
