Directory of Showa Tin Toy Makers

From the late 1940s to the 1960s, Japanese factories made the tin plate robots, cars and space toys that collectors around the world now seek. Most toys carry a small printed trademark, and learning these marks is the quickest way to identify a maker. This directory lists the principal names.

Principal makers and their marks

Maker Mark Known for
Masudaya MT, Modern Toys Robots and battery operated space toys
Nomura TN Robots, cars and mechanical figures
Yonezawa Y Robots, space vehicles and large cars
Horikawa SH Robots of the 1960s, many with chest opening guns
Yoshiya KO Clockwork robots and novelty figures
Asahi Toy ATC Detailed tin plate cars
Alps ALPS Battery operated animals and figures
Bandai Bandai Cars, later character toys
Ichiko Ichiko Large friction cars

Many toys were made for American importers and carry the importer's name on the box, such as Cragstan or Linemar, alongside or instead of the Japanese maker's mark.

Dating by marks

  • Made in Occupied Japan. Used on exports from roughly 1947 to 1952, and a clear sign of an early post-war toy.
  • Made in Japan. Used from the end of the Occupation onwards.
  • Power. Clockwork and friction toys generally precede the battery operated toys that dominated the later 1950s and 1960s.

Boxes matter

An original box with its illustrated artwork can account for a large share of a toy's value. Check that the box art, the stock number and the maker's mark match the toy inside.

Condition notes

  • Lithographed tin scratches easily, and surface wear is judged by how much of the original printing survives.
  • Battery compartments should be checked for corrosion from old batteries.
  • Replacement parts and repainted areas are common on robots and should be disclosed.
