The Piece
Japanese embroidery has a long storytelling tradition in which mythical guardians, animals and supernatural imagery become wearable artwork. One side of this jacket presents Shōki (鍾駗), one of the most iconic protective figures of Japanese and Chinese folklore, traditionally associated with driving away demons and evil spirits, protection and strength, courage and warrior spirit, good fortune and safety. His image has appeared throughout Japanese painting, festival decoration, tattooing and traditional crafts, which has made him a highly respected motif among collectors.
The reverse features a bold tiger surrounded by flames, joining the tiger's courage, power, protection, ferocity and determination to the energy of fire. The flames heighten the sense of movement and intensity in the manner of Japanese tattoo compositions. Among collectors, Shōki and tiger designs are prized because they carry cultural symbolism beyond decoration, and here they come together with traditional tattoo aesthetics, reversible construction and the heritage of Japanese street fashion.
