Butterflies and flowers, rather than the customary dragons and tigers, carry the embroidery on this vintage Japanese souvenir jacket in green and gray. The chōchō has long stood in Japanese design for transformation and the brief grace of a season, giving the Yokosuka jumper a lighter, more lyrical register.

A vintage sukajan, or Yokosuka jumper, in green and gray, embroidered with chōchō butterflies and floral motifs in a tattoo-art idiom and cut as a bomber-style souvenir or tour jacket. The manufacturer's size is L, and the jacket is shown on a model 164 cm / 5 feet 4 inches tall.

The sukajan took shape in postwar Yokosuka, where Japanese embroiderers decorated bomber-style jackets for American servicemen; the form has since become a cornerstone of Japanese casual wear and a collecting field in its own right.
