Hokusai's waves, above all the Great Wave off Kanagawa from his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, became one of the defining images of ukiyo-e and of Japan abroad, while sakura, the cherry blossom, stands for the brief brilliance of life. The sukajan, born in postwar Yokosuka where Japanese embroidery met American souvenir culture, has long carried both motifs.
