The Piece

Spring-summer 2018 was the season Raf Simons took his runway to New York’s Chinatown and opened the archive of Peter Saville, the graphic designer behind the record sleeves of Factory Records. Saville’s artwork for Joy Division and New Order was cut into patches, panels and woven labels and set onto oversized tailoring, parkas and denim, a meeting of two bodies of work that had shaped each other for decades. The boxy black trucker, model 181-723, became one of the defining pieces of that collection and remains among the most sought-after Raf Simons garments of the New York years.

This jacket carries the New Order side of that conversation. The back panel reproduces Saville’s 1983 sleeve for Power, Corruption & Lies, built around Henri Fantin-Latour’s still life of roses; an RS patch sits on the chest, and a column of woven labels with track titles runs down the front and along the sleeve. Snap buttons, two chest flap pockets and a dropped, very wide body complete the shape.

Tagged XL, it is the largest cut of the model and the least often seen. It measures 70 cm across the shoulder and 95 cm pit to pit, so it falls as a true oversized coat-jacket even on a tall frame, the sleeves stacking at the wrist.

The Saville denim has become a reference point for the meeting of fashion and music graphics, and the jackets now circulate mostly in small and medium sizes. An XL in honest, faded condition is the version for someone who wants the full intended volume and plans to wear it rather than keep it folded.
