Two complete statement jackets share one garment here. One face is a lyrical pond of scarlet kingyo drifting among lotus over smoky water; turned inside out, silver-gray ryū dragons coil through purple chrysanthemums with the gravity of a tattoo composition. Neither side reads as the lesser face, and that dual completeness is the jacket's greatest strength.
The Piece
An exceptionally elaborate reversible sukajan, or Yokosuka souvenir jacket, tagged size L-XL. Rather than offering a simple alternate colorway, it carries two entirely different compositions. One face is devoted to kingyo, Japanese ornamental goldfish, swimming among red and white lotus blossoms over stylized dark water currents; brilliant scarlet fish appear across the front, sleeves and back, turning virtually the whole garment into one continuous pond. The alternate face presents large silver-gray Japanese dragons twisting across a black ground amid rich purple chrysanthemum and floral embroidery, their bodies extending across the chest, sleeves and back rather than staying confined to isolated patches, which gives the jacket a wraparound, tattoo-art quality.
The fish are best understood as kingyo rather than koi carp: rounded bodies, decorative tails, vivid red coloring and fanciful swimming poses belong to the kingyo visual tradition. Where koi imagery carries a muscular, heroic character, kingyo are lighter and more ornamental, often tied to the refined seasonal imagery of Japanese summer. Red kingyo appear on the chest, both sleeves, the upper, central and lower back and the side areas, so the side behaves like a continuous textile painting rather than a souvenir jacket with isolated emblems. Across the back, fish of different sizes swim in different directions, several large specimens at the center and smaller ones above and below, surrounded by red and pale lotus blossoms, green lotus leaves, winding stems, dark gray water currents and circular bubble-like accents, as if looking down into an ornamental pond.
The water is the most subtle element of this side. Instead of conventional blue waves, the designer used broad smoky currents only slightly lighter than the black body: from a distance the red kingyo and lotus dominate, while up close the darker water patterns emerge as an additional layer, a restraint that keeps the jacket sophisticated despite its abundance of embroidery. Some lotus blossoms are saturated red, others soft pale pink and white, and their geometry plays against the flowing fish, giving the artwork the structure of traditional Japanese floral-and-water compositions rather than a novelty goldfish design. On the front, large kingyo swim across both halves of the torso while red lotus and green leaves climb upward and darker water lines pass behind; the two asymmetrical halves form one complete scene when zipped. The ivory sleeves carry kingyo and lotus motifs that link front and back, framed by black inset stripes running down each sleeve.
Reversed, the palette becomes black, ivory, silver-gray, smoky purple, violet and restrained gold. Two large dragons mirror one another across the central zipper, each coiling vertically down the torso with its head high on the chest, rendered with elongated snouts, horns, whiskers, claws, articulated scales, pale underbellies, curling tails, purple floral arrangements and gold-highlighted detailing for an almost heraldic symmetry. Their bodies curve around the chest, torso, shoulders, sleeves and back, so the creatures appear to wrap around the wearer. Surrounding them are extensive purple floral embroideries, including forms strongly reminiscent of kiku, the Japanese chrysanthemum, in deep violet, lavender, smoky purple, cream, muted green and touches of gold, tempering the dragons' aggression: power balanced by beauty. On the back a long dragon winds vertically from the upper back toward the lower section among purple chrysanthemums, its silver-gray scale work clearly visible against the black field without bright color.
The dragons reward close inspection. The embroidery articulates rows upon rows of individual scales, the pale underbellies are worked separately from the darker outer scales, fine gold accent lines add definition, and the changing scale direction around the curves communicates movement. The heads are among the strongest details, with sharp horns, flaring brows, golden whiskers, articulated jaws, visible fangs, dark facial shading, bright eyes and flowing facial hair, at once ferocious and ornamental against the purple flowers. The jacket belongs to the modern Japanese sukajan revival, in which the classic Yokosuka silhouette is reinterpreted through ambitious embroidery, tattoo-art imagery and reversible construction; souvenir jackets traditionally developed around elaborate embroidered imagery on satin-like materials, and reversible construction became one of the form's characteristic variations.

Condition
- Good overall pre-owned condition with strong visual presentation, judged from the photographs.
- The kingyo embroidery remains vivid and the dragon embroidery dense; floral coloring is strong, the rib-knit elements are intact, the reversible zipper construction appears to function, the satin keeps an attractive sheen and the large-scale artwork is well preserved.
- As a pre-owned embroidered satin garment it may show storage wrinkles, light surface rubbing, small pulls, minor thread irregularities, faint marks, minor age-related discoloration and light wear around the cuffs, collar or waistband.
- The photographs form an important part of the condition record.
Two Faces Compared
The rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband are striped in black and cream, tying both faces together.
- Kingyo face: deep black body; ivory or cream sleeves with black panels; fish in brilliant scarlet, white and black; flowers in red, white and pale pink; green leaves; smoky charcoal water. Bright, lyrical, aquatic, floral and seasonal, playful yet elegant.
- Dragon face: black body; ivory or cream sleeves with black; dragons in silver-gray, cream, charcoal and muted gold; flowers in purple, violet, lavender and cream; restrained gold and yellow accents. Dark, mythological, tattoo-inspired, ornamental and highly dramatic.
Sizing Guidance
Japanese L-XL sizing should not be read automatically as a contemporary Western L-XL, so flat measurements are the primary fit guide. Compare body length, pit-to-pit chest, upper sleeve, lower sleeve and hem width with a similar jacket that already fits comfortably.
Styling and Display
The kingyo side suits black or white denim, wide trousers, vintage sneakers, black boots, Japanese streetwear and kimono-inspired styling, colorful without becoming cartoonish. The dragon side moves toward black denim, leather boots, biker styling, Japanese rock fashion, tattoo-inspired outfits, darker amekaji and monochrome streetwear. Because the artwork covers so much surface, either face displays flat almost like an embroidered textile panel.
