Wine-Red and Black Japanese Bomber Featuring the Sanada Warrior, Rokumonsen Crest and Legendary Ten Braves

Description

A richly layered Miyabi Musubi reversible sukajan celebrating the visual mythology of the Sanada samurai clan.

The principal side combines deep wine-red sleeves with a black satin back panel, framing a dramatic red-armored warrior beneath flowering cherry trees. The composition is built around the unmistakable six-coin Sanada crest, with sweeping purple flames, Japanese calligraphy and enormous pink-and-white chrysanthemums filling the lower half.

Embroidery and printed artwork overlap throughout the design. Cherry blossoms rise beyond the boundaries of the central panel and continue onto the wine-red shoulders, creating a textured three-dimensional canopy above the warrior. Gold-thread characters are stitched directly over the printed chrysanthemums, giving the surface the layered richness of a contemporary Japanese tattoo composition.

The reverse presents an entirely different personality. Smooth midnight-black satin is decorated more sparingly with gold embroidery, striped beige ribbing and the six-coin crest. The back lists the names associated with the legendary Sanada Ten Braves, accompanied by the Rokumonsen and antler-like forms.

One side is theatrical, ornate and intensely colorful. The other is quiet, shadowy and almost ceremonial.

Visual Presence

This is not a timid souvenir jacket.

From a distance, the crimson armor and enormous chrysanthemums dominate the silhouette. Closer inspection reveals an entire thicket of smaller details: falling petals, flowering branches, flames, crests, calligraphic inscriptions and partially concealed architectural imagery.

Its reversibility makes the contrast especially satisfying. The decorated side feels like an illustrated battle legend, while the dark reverse reduces the same narrative to names and symbols, almost like an embroidered roll call of warriors.

Associated warrior: Sanada Yukimura / Nobushige tradition

Reverse colors: Midnight black with beige and gold details

The names embroidered across the darker reverse appear to represent the legendary Ten Braves, including figures such as Sarutobi Sasuke, Kirigakure Saizō, Miyoshi Seikai and Miyoshi Isa.

Iconography and Meaning

The six circular coins are the Rokumonsen, also called the Six Mon Coins or Six Linked Coins, one of the best-known emblems associated with the Sanada family. Ueda City describes the six-coin emblem as the Sanada crest and connects it with the traditional fare for crossing the river into the afterlife, giving it an enduring association with readiness to face death without fear.

The red armor evokes the celebrated Sanada crimson battle image, while the chrysanthemums give the warrior a magnificent floral frame rather than a conventional battlefield. Cherry blossoms introduce beauty, impermanence and falling-petal movement across the upper composition.

Sanada Nobushige, popularly remembered as Yukimura, became particularly associated with the defense of Osaka Castle, while the wider Sanada family maintained an important historical connection with Ueda and later Matsushiro.

The Ten Braves belong primarily to the legendary and literary world surrounding Yukimura. Their names transform the subdued reverse into a tribute to loyalty, comradeship and the heroic imagination of the Sengoku period.

Style, Materials and Construction

Classic raglan-sleeve souvenir-jacket construction with a reversible metal zipper, striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband.

The elaborate wine-red side combines:

  • Satin-finish wine-red sleeves
  • Black shoulder and sleeve stripes
  • Printed central warrior artwork
  • Raised cherry-blossom embroidery
  • Metallic and multicolor threadwork
  • Large chrysanthemum imagery
  • Sanada six-coin crests
  • Japanese calligraphy and flame motifs
  • Slanted front pockets

The reverse uses smooth dark satin with contrasting beige-and-black striped ribbing. Gold embroidery appears across the chest and upper back, accompanied by six linked coins and the names of the Sanada Ten Braves.

The exact fiber composition is not confirmed by the supplied photographs. The garment has the soft sheen and fluid drape associated with rayon or similar satin-finish sukajan fabrics.

Period Assessment

Contemporary Japanese fashion sukajan, visually estimated to date from the 2000s or later.

The combination of large-format printed artwork, selective raised embroidery, reversible construction and highly stylized Sengoku imagery is consistent with modern wagara streetwear rather than an early postwar military souvenir jacket.

Condition

Good pre-owned condition with visible age-related character and surface wear.

The decorative side retains strong color and substantial visual impact. The cherry-blossom embroidery appears dense, dimensional and largely intact, while the central samurai and chrysanthemum artwork remains clearly defined.

Visible characteristics include:

  • Natural wrinkling and folding throughout the satin
  • Uneven sheen and cloudy surface variation
  • Light rubbing and scattered handling marks
  • Mild wear and discoloration around portions of the rib-knit trim
  • Small areas of thread wear or loosened embroidery
  • General patina consistent with previous use and storage

No major holes or large structural tears are apparent in the supplied photographs. Please inspect every image closely, as the photographs form an essential part of the condition description.

Dimensions

Measurements were taken flat and are approximate.

A. Body length: 65 cm / 25.6 in
B. Chest width, armpit to armpit: 60 cm / 23.6 in
C. Sleeve length from neck: 75 cm / 29.5 in
D. Underarm sleeve length: 56 cm / 22.0 in
E. Relaxed hem width: 50 cm / 19.7 in

The marked Japanese XL should approximately accommodate a Western L to regular XL, although fit depends on body shape, layering and preferred silhouette.

Please compare these measurements with a similar jacket that fits comfortably rather than relying only on the marked size.

Display and Collecting Appeal

The combination of the Sanada warrior, six-coin crest and Ten Braves gives this jacket unusually concentrated historical-fantasy appeal.

It is particularly suited to collectors of:

  • Miyabi Musubi clothing
  • Sanada Yukimura imagery
  • Sengoku-period inspired fashion
  • Japanese reversible sukajan
  • Wagara and tattoo-influenced artwork
  • Samurai and clan-crest memorabilia
  • Elaborately embroidered Japanese streetwear

The detailed side presents beautifully when displayed from the back, while the restrained reverse makes the jacket considerably easier to wear in everyday settings.

Rather than simply repeating the same artwork in another color, the two sides behave like illustration and epilogue: the battle legend on one face, the names of its heroes on the other. ⚔️🌸
