Ornate Two-Sided Wagara Jacket with Dragon, Phoenix, Cherry Blossoms and Mythical Animal Embroidery
Description
A richly embroidered reversible sukajan in black, bronze and antique-gold tones, combining two dramatically different worlds of Japanese decorative imagery.
The principal side presents a monumental dragon and phoenix composition beneath drifting cherry blossoms. Across the front, a serpentine dragon coils over the black satin body, its scales rendered in dense metallic-gray thread with bronze outlines and flashes of white at the claws and teeth. The reverse is dominated by a long-tailed phoenix embroidered in burgundy, muted gold and silver-gray, surrounded by flowering sakura and swirling cloud forms.
Bronze satin sleeves soften the dark central panels, while black piping and striped rib-knit trim sharpen the silhouette. Cherry blossoms continue across the sleeves and body, breaking beyond the main compositions and giving the jacket an immersive, all-over quality.
Turn the jacket inside out and an entirely different landscape emerges. The reverse side is covered with cranes, white rabbits, butterflies, shishi-like guardian beasts, Mount Fuji, waves, clouds and circular Japanese crests. The embroidery is layered over a black satin ground patterned with muted gold mon, creating an exceptionally dense textile surface from collar to hem.
One side feels regal and mythic. The other unfolds like an illustrated bestiary from a fantastic Japanese dreamscape.
Visual Presence
This jacket is built for close looking.
From a distance, the dragon and phoenix create a clear symbolic pairing. Up close, the embroidery reveals scales, feathers, claws, flower centers, cloud curls and tiny scattered petals rendered through dozens of changes in stitch direction and thread density.
The reversible side is even more elaborate. Cranes fly across the chest, rabbits leap through waves and clouds, butterflies hover around guardian beasts, and Mount Fuji rises in vivid crimson among the layered motifs.
Its palette is unusually refined for such an exuberant composition. Instead of loud primary colors, the jacket relies on charcoal black, bronze, dusty pink, antique gold, burgundy and silver-gray, giving the imagery a mature and almost ceremonial character.

Iconography and Meaning
The dragon and phoenix form one of the most powerful symbolic pairings in East Asian visual culture.
The dragon represents strength, authority, movement and protective energy. The phoenix introduces renewal, virtue, harmony and radiant beauty. Together, they create a balanced composition of force and grace.
Cherry blossoms drift across both figures, introducing themes of impermanence and the fleeting brilliance of life.
The reverse expands this symbolic vocabulary:
- Cranes suggest longevity, fidelity and good fortune.
- White rabbits evoke agility, purity and lunar folklore.
- Butterflies represent transformation and joy.
- Shishi-like guardian beasts introduce protection and spiritual power.
- Mount Fuji anchors the imagery in Japan and conveys endurance and majesty.
- Waves and clouds create continuous movement between earth, water and sky.
- Mon-style crests give the satin ground the visual richness of traditional Japanese textiles.
Rather than centering on one isolated motif, the jacket assembles an entire symbolic ecosystem.

The exact fiber composition is not confirmed in the supplied photographs. The fabric has the sheen and fluid drape associated with polyester or rayon-blend satin commonly used in contemporary sukajan.
Period Assessment
Contemporary Japanese-inspired fashion sukajan, likely dating from the 2000s or later.
The extraordinarily dense machine embroidery, fully reversible construction and sophisticated all-over motif system align with modern premium wagara streetwear rather than early postwar military souvenir jackets.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with visible signs of previous wear and storage.
The embroidery remains exceptionally strong, colorful and densely defined. The dragon, phoenix, cranes, rabbits and guardian figures retain substantial texture and visual impact.
Visible characteristics include:
- Natural wrinkling and folding throughout the satin
- Surface rubbing and areas of uneven sheen
- Light handling wear
- Minor thread irregularities around portions of the embroidery
- General wear to the rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
- Possible small pulls, loose fibers or age-related marks
No major hole or large structural tear is apparent in the supplied photographs. Please inspect every image carefully, as the photographs form an essential part of the condition description.
Size and Fit
Marked size: XL
The jacket appears to follow Japanese sizing and may correspond approximately to a Western L or regular XL depending on shoulder width, chest measurement, layering and preferred fit.
Please compare the garment’s actual measurements with a similar jacket that fits comfortably before purchase.
Display and Collecting Appeal
This jacket offers unusually strong crossover appeal for collectors of:
- Dragon and phoenix imagery
