A richly embroidered Miyabi Musubi sukajan in which nearly every surface joins the design. One way it is a tranquil waterscape of scarlet kingyo and flowering lotus; reversed, silver-gray dragons coil among deep purple chrysanthemums. Two complete iconographic worlds, one jacket.
The Piece
This reversible Miyabi Musubi (雅結) sukajan offers two dramatically different compositions: one side devoted to brilliant red kingyo goldfish swimming among lotus blossoms and flowing water, the other dominated by a pair of serpentine Japanese dragons surrounded by purple chrysanthemums. Rather than relying on a single large emblem, the embroidery travels around the entire garment, from the chest and sleeves through the sweeping back compositions, making it a particularly lavish example of the modern Japanese sukajan tradition.
Kingyo (金魚), Japanese ornamental goldfish, form one of the most unusual sukajan themes. Here a large school of them appears across the chest, sleeves and back, embroidered with dimensional tails, layered scales and spreading fins, their saturated vermilion vivid against the almost ink-black body. Red goldfish became closely tied to urban popular culture in the Edo period and remain familiar in summer festivals, prints and traditional design. They swim through stylized dark water currents with red, white and pale pink lotus blossoms, green lotus leaves and buds, so that scarlet fish, black water, ivory satin sleeves, lush leaves and subtle gray water patterns give the side the character of an illustrated textile. The lotus, which rises cleanly above muddy water, carries long Buddhist associations with purity, awakening and transcendence, a contemplative counterpart to the dragons on the other face. On this side the embroidery crosses both chest panels, runs down both sleeves, around the shoulders, throughout the back and into the lower front panels.
Reversed, two enormous dragons (ryū, 龍) coil across the front panels in mirror-like formation while another long dragon sweeps vertically across the back. They are worked mainly in silver-gray, pale mint, charcoal, black, muted gold and purple accents, their elongated bodies covered in hundreds of individually articulated scales; yellow-gold horns and facial accents sharpen the expressions, dark cloud-like embroidery adds depth, and the dragons continue onto the sleeves so the design wraps the body. The ryū traditionally carries associations with strength, authority, wisdom, rain and water, transformation, protection, supernatural power and good fortune; its link with water sets up a dialogue with the kingyo side, peaceful aquatic life on one face and the mythical master of water on the other. Numerous purple and violet kiku (菊), chrysanthemums long associated with longevity, refinement and autumnal beauty, appear around the dragons and within decorative panels and floral cartouches.
The asymmetry of the aquatic side and the near-symmetry of the dragon front give each presentation its own personality, so the jacket reads as two statement pieces rather than a jacket with an alternate lining. The embroidery is exceptionally heavy: dragon scale work, whiskers, claws, horns, facial details and layered contour stitching; kingyo with individual scale patterns, segmented fins and long flowing tails; layered lotus petals and finely outlined leaves; stylized running water; chrysanthemum petals in several purple tones; contrasting yellow-gold outlines; and continuous sleeve embroidery. The glossy satin-like shell lets light move across the surface and emphasizes the raised work, the smooth black ground acting almost like lacquer beneath the dragons. The slightly longer body gives this example a more dramatic silhouette than very short vintage-pattern souvenir jackets. The construction, label style and elaborate revival embroidery point to modern Japanese production, likely around the 2000s to 2010s, rather than an original 1940s to 1950s souvenir jacket.
