A black work shirt torn open and grafted onto an ombré plaid flannel, the kind of deliberate collision between two garments that Mihara Yasuhiro has made his signature since the brand left the shoe last.

The Piece

Mihara Yasuhiro has spent three decades treating clothing as something to be dismantled and reassembled. His shirts in particular are built as if two ordinary garments were cut apart on the studio floor and stitched back together, with frayed edges left raw so the act of construction stays visible. The style code A09SH078 places this piece in the autumn-winter 2022 cycle, attributed to the season in which the label pushed its broken, half-and-half shirting hardest.

The base is a heavy black cotton twill work shirt with two flap chest pockets, white snap-style buttons and a long curved hem. Over the left shoulder, a black and ivory ombré plaid flannel has been torn and layered in, running down the full sleeve and across the collar, with a loose flap of check left hanging at the chest. The back repeats the idea: one side black twill, the other the plaid. The house name-and-password patch sits at the lower front, and a printed Wearing Instructions label is stitched inside.

Size 44 is the house medium and wears roomy, with dropped shoulders and a long body that sits well untucked over wide trousers. It works as an overshirt in autumn, worn open over a plain white T-shirt, and it photographs as clearly as anything in the Mihara catalogue.
