Louis Vuitton × Kansai Yamamoto Sequinned Kabuki Leather Biker Jacket, Black Calfskin, Cruise 2018, Size 36

The Piece

In 2018 Nicolas Ghesquière invited Kansai Yamamoto, the designer behind David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust wardrobe, to reinterpret his kabuki faces and daruma dolls across the Cruise collection. The pieces were sold for a single season and have been collected ever since.

The jacket is a slim double-breasted biker cut short at the waist with three-quarter sleeves, in a fine-grained black calfskin with a soft sheen. Silver-tone zips close the front, cuffs and pockets; a snap-down lapel and a belted hem finish the shape. Across the back, the red-faced daruma is built up in thousands of hand-applied sequins and beads, fully intact.

Lined in rayon and cupro with the Louis Vuitton Paris label, French size 36 and the care label; bought at a Louis Vuitton boutique in Japan and still carrying the Louis Vuitton Japan tag and care card. Retail was ¥604,800.

Size 36 (roughly a UK 8 / US 4). Measured flat: shoulder 39 cm (15.4 in), chest 45 cm (17.7 in), waist 42.5 cm, length 47 cm (18.5 in) from under the collar, sleeve 44 cm (17.3 in). Weight about 850 g.

Condition

• Graded A in Japan: a lightly worn jacket, rated 8 of 10 by its previous keeper.
• A few rubs of about 1 cm below the back collar and fine scuffs around the collar and yoke, shown in the photographs; the sheen of the leather makes them hard to see.
• No sequins or beads missing; no colour loss at the cuffs; lining clean at collar and cuffs.

Woven labels, size and care labels, the style reference, print registration, zips, rib knit and stitching are examined together and documented in Japan before dispatch.
