The Piece

Isamu Katayama founded Backlash in Tokyo in 1999 and made it the leading name in Japanese designer leather. The label is known for working with Japanese tanneries, for product-washing and dyeing finished garments, and for a rock-and-roll sensibility shared with the musicians who wear it. Its riders jackets are made in Japan in small runs and are collected by followers of the label much as watch collectors follow references.

Reference 2074-01 is a single riders jacket in Japan steerhide, cut with a short point collar, a straight front zip, a slanted zipped chest pocket, two zipped hand pockets and long zips at the cuffs. White paint has been worked over the leather by hand, covering the left front and both sleeves with phrases and scrawled lettering and continuing across the back yoke, while the lower back is left clean black. The inside is lined in a red tartan check that shows at the collar when the jacket is open. The original Backlash leather swing tag, with model, size and material, is still attached.

The fit is close and straight with a slightly longer body, typical of Backlash riders, and sits well with slim denim.

Hand-painted Backlash pieces vary from one jacket to the next, so each is, in effect, unique.
