The Piece

Louis Vuitton and Kusama turn one of the artist's most enduring subjects into wearable design. M46436 begins with the restrained black and graphite vocabulary of Monogram Eclipse Reverse canvas, its LV initials, quatrefoils and floral emblems rendered graphite-on-black, then disrupts it with enormous pumpkin forms in brilliant color. Rather than small decorative motifs, the pumpkins extend across the lower body and become the bag's principal architecture, a reversal that gives it unusual presence within the Louis Vuitton archive.

A vibrant pink-and-blue pumpkin appears at the left, a monumental blue and turquoise pumpkin occupies the center, and a smaller pale green pumpkin completes the composition at the right. Each is built from dense rows of dots and linear contours that create an almost hypnotic sense of volume, with green stems punctuating the upper edges. On the curved crescent body the pumpkins seem to wrap around the bag rather than sit flat, and the central one covers enough surface to read almost as a standalone artwork. Electric blue, turquoise, mint green, pink and dark green glow against graphite and black, while cool dark-silver hardware on the zippers, strap fittings, buckles and attachments stays integrated with the dark ground.

The elongated silhouette offers substantially more room than a conventional belt bag: a double-zip main closure, a large central compartment with an interior open pocket, a rear exterior pocket for a phone, cards or tickets, an adjustable integrated strap and a discreet leather top handle that leaves the artwork uninterrupted. It holds a long wallet, smartphone, keys, compact camera, eyewear, small cosmetics and travel documents, and can be worn across the chest or back, over one shoulder or around the waist.

Produced in limited seasonal numbers, the piece is a natural unisex design: its technical bumbag construction carries a contemporary menswear character, while Kusama's artwork takes it beyond conventional gendered styling.
