Mikkyō: Esoteric Buddhism

Mikkyō (密教), the secret teaching, is the esoteric Buddhism brought to Japan in the early ninth century by Kūkai, who founded the Shingon school, and developed within Tendai. It teaches that through ritual, a practitioner can realise buddhahood in this very body, and it produced the richest and most dramatic religious art of the Heian period.

The three mysteries

Esoteric practice unites body, speech and mind with those of a buddha. With the body, the practitioner forms mudrā. With speech, he recites mantras and seed syllables in Sanskrit script, bonji. With the mind, he visualises the deity and its mandala. Because these methods are powerful, they are transmitted secretly from master to disciple through initiation, kanjō.

Shingon and Taimitsu

Shingon esotericism, called Tōmitsu after Tōji, has its centres on Mount Kōya and in Kyoto. Tendai esotericism, Taimitsu, was developed by Saichō's successors. Both centre on Dainichi, the cosmic Buddha, and on the Two Realms Mandala.

Collecting notes

  • Esoteric ritual implements, mandala scrolls and small figures in portable shrines are the most accessible areas.
  • Sanskrit seed syllables on paintings and objects identify the deity they invoke, and are worth learning to recognise.
