Dainichi Nyorai

Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来), the Great Sun Buddha, is the cosmic Buddha of esoteric Buddhism: not a figure who lived in history, but the universe itself understood as enlightened. In the Shingon school founded by Kūkai, every buddha and deity is an emanation of Dainichi, and he sits at the centre of both halves of the Two Realms Mandala.

A buddha who wears a crown

Dainichi breaks the rule that buddhas are dressed simply. He wears a jewelled crown, necklaces and armlets, with his hair piled high, because he embodies the totality of the cosmos, including its splendour. A crowned, seated figure with buddha-like serenity is therefore likely to be Dainichi rather than a bodhisattva.

The two forms

  • Diamond Realm Dainichi, Kongōkai. The hands form the wisdom fist, chiken-in: the right hand encloses the raised index finger of the left. This is the most frequently seen form.
  • Womb Realm Dainichi, Taizōkai. The hands rest in the lap in the meditation gesture, hokkai jōin.

In both, Dainichi is the centre of the Five Wisdom Buddhas, Gochi Nyorai, with a buddha in each direction.

Dainichi in Japanese art

The seated Dainichi of Enjōji in Nara, completed in 1176, is the earliest known work of the young sculptor Unkei, already showing the vitality that would transform Kamakura sculpture. At Tōji in Kyoto, Kūkai's plan for the lecture hall places Dainichi at the centre of a three-dimensional mandala of twenty-one statues, among the most powerful ensembles in Japan.

Collecting notes

  • Dainichi figures appear in Shingon household altars and portable shrines, often small and finely carved in fragrant wood.
  • Check the mudrā carefully. A lost or replaced finger in the wisdom fist is a common repair.
  • Mandala scrolls and printed mandalas place Dainichi at the centre, and are an accessible way into esoteric imagery.
