Myōō: The Wisdom Kings

Myōō (明王), the Wisdom Kings, are the fierce guardians of esoteric Buddhism. Their faces blaze with anger and their bodies are wreathed in fire, yet they are expressions of compassion: the stern force of the buddhas, turned on beings too stubborn to be reached by gentleness, and on the passions that bind them. They form the third of the four ranks.

Compassion in anger

In esoteric teaching, a buddha has three bodies of action: the gentle buddha, the bodhisattva who teaches, and the wrathful king who commands. The Myōō are this third body. Their anger is aimed at ignorance and desire, not at the believer, and their weapons are tools of rescue: the sword that cuts delusion, the rope that binds the passions and hauls beings to safety.

The marks of a wisdom king

  • A furious face with fangs, glaring eyes and often a third eye.
  • Hair standing on end like flame, or a braid over one shoulder.
  • Multiple heads, arms and sometimes legs, each holding a weapon or implement.
  • A halo of flames behind the body, and a seat of rock, a lotus or an animal.

The wisdom kings of Japan

Arrival in Japan

The Myōō came to Japan with esoteric Buddhism in the early ninth century, brought by Kūkai and Saichō's successors. They were invoked in rites for the protection of the state, for victory and for healing, often in the fire ritual, goma. Their dynamic forms gave sculptors a new freedom, and they remain among the most dramatic images in Japanese art.

Collecting notes

  • Flame halos are separate pieces and easily damaged. A complete, original flame halo adds greatly to a figure.
  • Count arms and faces and note the weapons: they are the only reliable way to tell the kings apart.
  • Fudō is far more common than any other wisdom king. Sets of the five are rare.
