Schott: The Perfecto and the American Rider

Schott was founded in New York in 1913 by the brothers Irving and Jack Schott. In 1928 the firm introduced the Perfecto, named for Irving’s favourite cigar, and it is generally cited as the first motorcycle jacket sold with a zip front. Marlon Brando wore a Perfecto in The Wild One in 1953, and the jacket has stood for rebellion ever since.

In Japan, Schott leathers are an amekaji staple, worn with selvedge denim and boots as part of the American casual tradition. Heavy steerhide jackets reward age: look for supple creasing, even colour and sound stitching, and treat a cracked lining or a failing zip as a condition point in the price.

The Perfecto cut is short and square, so check shoulder width and sleeve length carefully. A properly fitted example sits at the waist and does not ride up when the arms are raised.
