G-Shock: Triple Ten and the Unbreakable Idea

The first G-Shock, the DW-5000C, reached the market in 1983, the result of Kikuo Ibe’s long campaign at Casio to build a watch that could survive a fall. Its brief became known as Triple 10: a ten-metre drop, ten bar of water resistance and a ten-year battery.

From a tough tool watch it grew into a collector’s category of its own, with limited editions, regional releases and collaborations that Japanese enthusiasts follow closely. Condition of resin, bezel, strap and module is recorded on each piece, along with the box, the manual and any release information that survives.
