Golden dragons coil down both sleeves, a roaring tiger commands the chest, and across the back an enormous gorilla head appears between the words Tokyô and Daikanyama. Built entirely in dense embroidery on faded indigo, this Yamane jacket from the wider EVISU universe is humorous, aggressive and strangely elegant.
The Piece
This YAMANE embroidered denim jacket, from the wider EVISU design universe, carries one of the label's most theatrical combinations of Japanese and pop-cultural imagery. The whole narrative is stitched rather than printed: layered brown, copper, coral, cream and gold threads give the animals dimension against the dark denim, while the naturally faded surface creates the irregular texture prized in archival Japanese streetwear. It behaves almost like three garments: a tiger-and-dragon composition from the front, inspired by Japanese tattoo imagery, souvenir jackets and postwar embroidered outerwear; dragons that animate along the arms from the side; and from behind, a gorilla portrait that turns the jacket into wearable graphic art. East Asian dragon symbolism, sukajan-style embroidery, American workwear, Tokyo district lettering, monster-movie and pulp-art energy and Y2K designer streetwear all collide here, with the charisma of a hand-built stage costume in an everyday denim jacket.
The front is intentionally asymmetrical. One side bears a large tiger head in profile, snarling with mouth fully open to show ivory teeth, a scarlet tongue and sharply defined markings; gold, tan, rust and cream thread suggests layered fur, while black and grey outlining intensifies the expression. The opposite chest carries a large rectangular flap pocket as a utilitarian counterweight, two diagonal lower hand pockets sit quietly in the body, and copper-toned buttons down the front, at the hem tabs and at the cuffs echo the warm thread colors. In East Asian decorative art the tiger stands for courage, authority and protection, its earthbound strength the natural counterpart to the dragon of sky, water and changing natural forces: earth and sky, strength and spirit, stillness and movement, instinct and wisdom, confrontation and balance. Here the tiger is anything but contemplative, closer to a mid-century tattoo flash sheet, carnival banner or classic monster poster.
Each sleeve carries a long, serpentine dragon in pale gold and cream, beginning near the upper arm and twisting downward in sweeping curves, with open jaws and visible teeth, long whiskers and horns, layered facial hair, individually articulated scales, clawed feet, flame-like spines, extended tails and curving white cloud or energy lines. The mirrored placement gives a guardian-like symmetry, the dragons traveling down either side of the body to frame the tiger and lead the eye toward the hands. The long-bodied dragon has deep roots throughout East Asian art; here it is treated with the bold theatricality of Japanese tattoo compositions and embroidered souvenir garments.
The back centers on a monumental gorilla portrait built from directional stitching that follows the brow, muzzle, cheeks and crown: dark brown and black establish the shadowed structure, copper and orange warm the fur, and cream and pink pick out the eyes, nostrils, teeth and mouth, giving a fixed, confrontational yet cartoon-like stare. Above, Tokyô is embroidered in raised coral lettering; beneath it, Daikanyama, the Tokyo neighborhood closely associated with fashion, design and independent retail. The layout borrows the destination embroidery of souvenir jackets, but where convention would place an eagle, tiger or map, it chooses an enormous gorilla face, closer to a lost movie-poster monster, an underground Tokyo mascot or a surreal souvenir from an imagined Daikanyama attraction.
Several techniques create depth: dense satin stitching for lettering, teeth and narrow outlines; longer directional stitches imitating fur and shifting tone across the gorilla and tiger; repeated curved stitches articulating the dragon scales; and contrasting outlines that separate each figure from the denim. The artwork is integrated into the garment rather than confined to patches, and slight shifts in stitch direction make the animals read darker or brighter as the jacket moves. The substantial dark indigo has a textured, crosshatched surface with irregular vertical fading and softened passages across the torso, sleeves and seams, and the unlined interior reveals the reverse of the gorilla embroidery, exposing the density and scale of the thread work.
