The Piece

A Real McCoy’s Type A-2 executed in vegetable-tanned deerskin and customized with War Art Colors leather patchwork and a hand-painted “Hell’s Angels” nose-art motif. Featuring AVG insignia and period-correct hardware including a TALON bell-shaped zipper, it presents in excellent, lightly worn condition with its artwork preserved: Second World War nose-art fantasy filtered through Japanese craftsmanship.

The back reads “A.V.G. Hell’s Angels,” a reference to the American Volunteer Group of Flying Tigers fame. At its center a red pin-up angel figure hovers between seduction and symbol, between propaganda and rebellion, and below runs “3 Pursuit Sqdn,” storytelling drawn from airfield folklore. The front carries an AVG sunburst patch and the sleeve an Army Air Forces insignia patch.

Deerskin changes the jacket’s personality. Where horsehide is rigid and armor-like, requires break-in and ages into structure, deerskin is soft and fluid, comfortable from the first wear and ages into drape. This jacket moves like cloth and feels like skin while still holding military form, a rare combination. Rich seal brown with subtle tonal variation, clean McCoy’s stitching and structured pockets that soften over time turn the leather into a canvas well suited to painted narrative.
