Caring for Buddhist Statues

A Buddhist statue that has survived centuries in a temple needs only modest, consistent care to survive centuries more. The guiding principle is to do little, gently and often, and to leave anything more to a conservator.

Climate

  • Keep wooden and lacquered figures in a stable environment, away from radiators, air-conditioning vents, fireplaces and outside walls.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, which fades pigment and dries wood.
  • Sudden changes in humidity cause cracks and lifting gilt. A moderately humid room is better than a very dry one.

Cleaning

  • Dust with a soft, dry brush, working gently into carving. A soft Japanese paste brush, hake, is ideal.
  • Never use water, polish or cleaning products on gilt, lacquer or painted surfaces.
  • Soot and old grime are part of the surface. Leave cleaning to a conservator.
  • Bronze and stone can be dusted in the same way. Do not polish old patina.

Handling

  • Lift a figure by its body and base, with both hands, never by the head, arms, halo or attributes.
  • Remove the halo and any separate parts before moving a figure.
  • Clean, dry hands are best for gilt; avoid fabric gloves, which can catch on fine carving.

Insects

Check wooden figures from time to time for fresh powder beneath or around them, a sign of active wood-boring insects. If found, isolate the piece and consult a conservator.

Earthquakes and accidents

Secure figures on shelves with museum wax or putty, keep them back from edges and consider a weighted base for tall images. Statues inside a zushi are well protected.

Incense and candles

If you make offerings, keep candles at a safe distance and use incense in moderation, as smoke darkens surfaces over time.
