Displaying Sacred Art at Home

A Buddhist image changes the room it stands in. Displayed with care, it becomes a still centre: a place for the eye to rest and for the mind to settle. This entry offers practical guidance drawn from Japanese custom and from museum practice, whether your interest is devotional, aesthetic or both.

Height and place

  • Set a statue at or above eye level, on a stand, shelf or low cabinet, never on the floor.
  • Give it space. A single figure against a plain wall has far more presence than one among many objects.
  • Choose a calm part of the home, away from doors that slam and busy passageways.

The alcove

In a Japanese room, the alcove, tokonoma, holds a hanging scroll, a flower arrangement and perhaps one object, changed with the seasons. A small statue, a Buddhist scroll or a zushi suits this setting well. A shelf or niche at home can play the same role.

Light

  • Warm, soft light suits gilt and lacquer, which were made to glow in dim halls.
  • Avoid direct sun and hot spotlights close to the surface.

Offerings

Devotional practice offers flowers, a light, incense and water before an image. Collectors who are not Buddhist sometimes place fresh flowers simply as a mark of respect. See Butsugu and Kōro.

Groups and companions

Keep triads together in their proper order, guardians facing outward, and the Seven Lucky Gods as a company. Fierce figures such as Fudō are traditionally placed to guard a doorway or a room.

Respect

Avoid uses that would offend believers, such as converting a statue into a lamp, and keep sacred images out of bathrooms. See The Ethics of Collecting Sacred Art.
