Caring for Lacquerware

Japanese lacquer, urushi, is remarkably durable once cured, yet it dislikes dry air, strong light and abrasion. With a little care, both everyday lacquer and fine maki-e will keep their depth and lustre for generations.

Light and climate

  • Keep lacquer out of direct sun. Ultraviolet light dulls and fades the surface over time.
  • Avoid very dry rooms and nearby heaters, radiators and fireplaces, which can make lacquer and its wooden core crack.
  • Avoid sudden changes of temperature and humidity. A stable room is better than a perfect one.

Handling

  • Handle lacquer with clean, dry hands, holding pieces by their bodies rather than by lids or rims.
  • Remove rings and bracelets that could scratch the surface.
  • Lift the lids of boxes and inrō straight up, as they are made to fit closely.

Cleaning

  • Dust decorative pieces with a soft cotton or silk cloth. Never use polish, solvents or abrasive cloths.
  • Wash lacquer bowls used for food by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, then dry them at once with a soft cloth.
  • Never soak lacquer, and never put it in a dishwasher or microwave.
  • Do not wash maki-e or decorated boxes. A soft, slightly damp cloth followed by a dry one is enough.

Storage

  • Wrap each piece in soft cloth or washi paper and keep it in its wooden box.
  • Store stacked bowls with paper or cloth between them to prevent rubbing.
  • New lacquer can have a faint scent, which fades with time and airing.

Repairs

Chips and cracks in lacquer should be repaired by a lacquer specialist, who can match the original materials. Gold repairs in the kintsugi tradition are an accepted and admired way to restore old damage.
