Hawaii by way of Yokosuka: a reversible souvenir jacket that turns from a cool blue island panorama of hula dancers and palms into a glowing copper composition where a dragon guards the Hawaiian archipelago beneath the word “Aloha.” Softer and more romantic than the eagles and tigers of most sukajan.
The Piece
This richly embroidered reversible sukajan carries the color and mythology of Hawaii across two completely different satin compositions: part Japanese souvenir-jacket tradition, part tropical travel keepsake, and a wonderfully unusual crossover.
The periwinkle-blue satin side presents a tropical panorama beneath the flowing word “Hawaii.” A monumental Hawaiian figure stands at the center, framed by palm trees, historic red architecture and four hula dancers arranged through the lower composition; the architectural and monumental elements suggest Honolulu's historic civic landscape. Muted green, coral, ivory, gold and red threads give the effect of a mid-century travel postcard translated into thread. Mirrored surfers ride stylized waves across the chest, and white satin sleeves, dark blue piping and striped navy-and-cream ribbing complete the side.
The reverse turns to a warm copper-brown body framed by silver-white sleeves. Across the back, a gold-embroidered “Aloha” rises above an elongated white-and-pink dragon twisting through clouds and stylized island terrain, surrounded by the names of the principal Hawaiian Islands: Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Hawaii, Niihau, Lanai and Kahoolawe. On the front, mirrored dragon heads are surrounded by pink and gold flowers, cloud forms and decorative foliage, with deep green and cream striped ribbing.
The composition reimagines the East Asian dragon, emblem of protection, elemental power, good fortune and transformation, as a guardian linking the islands, softened by “Aloha,” a word conveying affection, compassion, welcome and mutual respect. Hula, a narrative art of movement, chant and gesture, gives the blue side its celebratory character, while palms and surfers evoke island warmth and Hawaii's enduring ocean culture. The blue side feels airy, scenic and nostalgic, made for white denim, faded jeans or a cream shirt; the copper side is warmer, more symbolic and dramatic, suited to black trousers, dark denim or military-style boots. Either back also displays well as textile art.
