A Japanese military-Americana flight jacket by Tedman’s Ted Company, built on the lightweight U.S. Air Force L-2A silhouette and overrun by the label’s little red devil. Squadron-style patches crowd the navy front, while the back sends Fighting Teddy airborne with a cartoon bomb above an enormous “91.”
The Piece
This Tedman / Ted Company flight jacket is modeled on the classic L-2A lightweight U.S. Air Force flight-jacket silhouette and filled with the irreverent devil imagery that made Tedman one of the most recognizable names in Japanese amekaji culture. In a deep Air Force-style navy, it pairs military-inspired construction with the brand’s playful, rebellious character. Rather than a literal military reproduction, it interprets American aviation history through Japanese postwar amekaji, military fashion, hot-rod graphics, tattoo aesthetics, rockabilly culture and character-driven streetwear.
The L-2 series belongs to the visual language of early jet-age American flight clothing. Unlike heavier insulated bomber jackets meant for colder environments, the L-2 family was designed as a lighter-weight flight jacket, and the L-2A is particularly associated with the blue tones of the Air Force, which makes the deep navy of this Tedman piece especially apt. Where many Japanese brands pursue strictly serious reproductions of American military garments, Tedman starts from the same historic vocabulary and deliberately injects personality, asking what would happen if a cartoon devil enlisted in the Air Force.
The front is rich in aviation detail. A large circular patch shows the red Fighting Teddy devil flying above or through a cloud-like form on a warm yellow ground, functioning almost as a fictional squadron insignia. The opposite chest carries a rectangular personalized-style patch reading approximately “G.L. Teddy / Capt. / USAAF,” mimicking the name patches of historic flight clothing and casting Teddy as a devilish American airman. A further chest patch shows a wing motif with star insignia, and the upper sleeve carries an embroidered U.S. Air Force-style wing-and-star emblem.
The back turns the jacket into a full graphic statement. A large circular character graphic shows the Tedman devil airborne, carrying a cartoon aerial bomb beneath the hand-scripted words “Fighting Teddy,” with “Devil Air Bomb” and “Play Ground In The Sky” below. An oversized “91” in cream-white typography, finished with a devil-tail flourish, dominates the lower right like a squadron, aircraft or unit number, whether intended as a fictional designation or simply as graphic identity. The composition reads as a fictional squadron jacket assembled from WWII-style nose art, hot-rod graphics, military typography and mascot illustration.
The restrained navy lets crimson red, cream, white, yellow, gold, black and muted military tones stand out sharply. Tedman’s little red devil appears across the brand’s sukajan, MA-1 and flight jackets, denim, workwear, T-shirts and biker clothing; here he is presented in aviation mode, joining vintage nose-art humor to Japanese mascot culture.
