Sukajan reversible acolchado Tailor Toyo TT11592-119, jardín japonés de Misawa y dragones negros, otoño de 2008, talla M

One of the more narrative Tailor Toyo archive jackets of the late 2000s. A black-and-gold face carries an embroidered Misawa garden beneath Mount Fuji and three flags; the padded reverse, quilted in silver-white and wine red, belongs to the 429th Fighter-Bomber Squadron “Black Dragons” and their mischievous child mascot.

The Piece

A rare Tailor Toyo TT11592-119 padded reversible sukajan from Fall 2008, the official “Japanese Garden × Black Dragons” design. Archived Japanese retailer records identify the model as originally offered in black and gold with a wine-and-silver quilted reverse, at an original retail price of ¥39,900 including tax. Its two faces read like separate chapters of one military souvenir story: one evokes Japan as remembered through travel and landscape, the other the humor, insignia and identity of an American fighter-bomber unit.

The principal face has a deep black satin body, champagne-gold raglan sleeves and long black stripes running from the collar over the shoulders and down the arms, finished with black rib-knit trim with metallic and pale striping. Across the back, Mount Fuji in blue, white and pale grey rises above a dense garden of multilevel pagodas and temple structures with tiered golden roofs, red columns and blue details, a sweeping vermilion arched bridge over stylized water, layered pine and ornamental trees and multicolored foliage, with MISAWA worked in gold beneath. The restrained ground lets the embroidery glow in gold, teal, crimson, blue, ivory and muted violet, compressing depth like a painted Japanese garden; it gathers recognizable Japanese symbols rather than documenting one exact garden. Above the landscape fly three embroidered flags, the United States, the United Nations and Japan, framing the scene as a record of overseas service, alliance and exchange. Each chest carries a compact mirrored Mount Fuji landscape with snow-covered peaks, red trees, white clouds and dark foreground details.

The reverse is diamond-quilted through body and sleeves in luminous silver-white satin with wine-red sleeves that shift between burgundy, raspberry and deep magenta, recalling a custom flight jacket. The back carries “429th Ftr-Bmr Sqdn” and “Black Dragons” around a blond child mascot in red overalls running between two sketch-like dragons emerging through clouds: one worked mainly in pale outlines, the other black, mouth open beneath flowing whiskers, in a playful duel. His oversized head, cheeky expression and energetic stride recall the cartoon mascots of military insignia and unofficial squadron art. Paired black eagles in black, white and pale metallic thread, with ribbon-like lines around the wings, decorate the chest, and the welt pockets are trimmed in burgundy.

The imagery is historically coherent. Misawa Air Base has a long postwar relationship with American aviation: U.S. forces operated from the area after World War II, and multiple fighter units passed through during the early Cold War. The 429th Fighter-Bomber Squadron was activated at Misawa in July 1952 before deploying to Korea with F-84 Thunderjets. The jacket is a modern reproduction and reinterpretation of mid-century souvenir-jacket imagery, not an original Korean War-period serviceman’s jacket, and comes from a transitional period when Tailor Toyo’s standard line moved from glossy polyester satin toward the softer acetate-rayon associated with its higher-specification jackets. The 2008 model code, padded construction and unusual mascot distinguish it from the more frequently encountered tiger, eagle and generic Japan-map designs.

Condition

• Good pre-owned archive condition with natural surface character consistent with its age, materials and original wash-finished construction; no major tear, large missing embroidered section or severe structural damage is apparent in the photographs.
• Natural wrinkling and rippling throughout the satin; the rumpled surface is part of the model’s original wash finish, so a perfectly smooth finish should not be expected.
• Mild tonal variation across the champagne-gold sleeves and creasing within the quilted silver-white panels.
• Light wear around the rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband, and gentle surface wear near the pocket openings.
• Minor puckering around dense embroidered areas and occasional fine or raised embroidery fibers.
• Light patina and handling wear around the zipper, and softening from previous use and storage.
• The Misawa landscape, flags, child mascot, dragons, eagles and lettering remain colorful and visually strong.
• The photographs form an essential part of the condition record.

Fit & Sizing Guidance

Archived retailers published slightly differing measurements depending on method, both placing the size-M chest near 55 cm. The silhouette is classic sukajan: compact body length, raglan shoulders, moderate chest room, full padded sleeves, a gathered rib-knit waistband and layer-friendly quilting. It may fit relaxed on many Western small frames and closer to regular on many Western medium frames; compare with a similar jacket that fits well. The quilting gives more warmth and structure than a lightweight acetate sukajan.

Styling Notes

Padded and fully finished, the reverse works as a second complete jacket rather than a glimpse of lining.

• Black-and-gold Misawa face: raw indigo denim, black wide-leg trousers, olive military pants, cream chinos, engineer boots, high-top sneakers, loopwheel sweatshirts, Japanese amekaji layers, minimal black knitwear, heritage workwear
• Wine-and-silver Black Dragons face: faded black denim, burgundy or charcoal layers, white T-shirts, leather trousers, retro basketball sneakers, rockabilly styling, tattoo-inspired fashion, archive streetwear, military bomber silhouettes

Display Appeal

Displayed flat, the Misawa side reads as a dense embroidered landscape, while the quilted reverse brings an irreverent, military-inspired, slightly eccentric charm. The jacket speaks to collectors of Tailor Toyo archive fashion, Misawa Air Base memorabilia, 429th Fighter-Bomber Squadron imagery, Korean War-inspired apparel, Japanese military souvenir culture, padded satin bombers, cartoon squadron mascots and Japanese garden embroidery.
