Tailor Toyo KOSHO & CO. TT12679-119 Sukajan reversible Alaska Boy, terciopelo negro y mapa rojo acolchado, 2012

A rare Tailor Toyo KOSHO & CO. Special Edition of 2012, made in Japan from cotton velveteen, acetate satin, cotton filling and wool ribbing. Black velveteen carries an Arctic child, lightning-struck polar bears and dog-sled teams; the reverse is a red-and-gold quilted map announcing “Alaska the 49th State,” two halves of one Alaska story.

The Piece

Model TT12679-119 was officially catalogued in 2012 as “Eskimo Boy × Map of Alaska” and is also archived as “Alaska Boy × Alaska Map.” It revives one of the most imaginative subjects of the historic Alaska souvenir-jacket tradition, and it is not simply a reversible bomber with an alternate colorway but a two-part embroidered and illustrated narrative about Alaska, Arctic travel, statehood and the eccentric imagination of the 1950s souvenir-jacket era. Its original Japanese retail price of ¥69,300 placed it among the premium collector-grade sukajan of its period.

On the black velveteen back, beneath bold red “Alaska” lettering bordered or shadowed in pale thread, a child dressed for an Arctic winter runs or slides forward, one leg raised and a small burst of snow behind the foot. An oversized fur-trimmed hood in cream, gold, brown and pale yellow thread surrounds the smiling face; the orange snowsuit has mint-green trim, blue gloves and gray footwear. Horizontal gold and pale lines below the lettering read as stylized aurora, clouds or Arctic wind; a small pale-blue igloo sits behind the child, two narrow evergreen trees rise on the other side, and a jagged shelf of blue and white ice runs beneath. Against the dark pile the sparse landscape reads like a winter night sky, and the whole figure has the energy of a mid-century cartoon or illustrated postcard translated into embroidery.

The front widens the scene. Two pale polar bears rise upright from icy bases across the chest, gold lightning bolts radiating behind them in a fierce, almost heraldic pose; lightning-and-polar-bear imagery is among the best-known and most desirable themes of surviving Alaska jackets, and Tailor Toyo’s own archive identifies polar bears, lightning and dog-sled sleeves as signature elements of rare Alaska designs. Long formations of white sled dogs, connected by fine reins and touched with small orange facial accents, descend both sleeves, so the artwork moves whenever an arm is raised or turned. Slender red pocket welts anticipate the red reverse, and the black cotton velveteen shifts between deep black, charcoal and soft silver with the direction of its pile.

Reversed, the jacket becomes a brilliant diamond-quilted tour jacket. A sweeping banner reads “Alaska the ‘49th’ State” beneath a small flag-like emblem, and a large yellow map of Alaska fills the center back, with place names, aircraft, mountains and snowfields, Indigenous-inspired figures, wildlife, coastal scenes, fishing and marine imagery, small settlements, the adjacent word “Canada” and Aleutian island forms. Below the map a walrus rests on a floating white ice sheet in blue and red water, and a red aircraft flies to one side, a reminder of aviation’s place in the popular image of Alaska. Alaska became the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959, tying the lettering to statehood souvenir culture and to the late-1950s Alaska designs made for military-base markets.

Broad diamond quilting secures the cotton filling across the red acetate body, shifting the surface between scarlet, coral and crimson and laying a grid behind the printed map. The sleeves are pale gold or warm cream acetate with red shoulder and side stripes, and striped rib-knit in blue, cream and black frames the neck, cuffs and waistband. On the front, twin polar bears stand on individual ice formations, bending toward the water in a quieter, more naturalistic scene than the lightning bears of the opposite face, above two angled pockets with pale borders. The cotton filling gives this side genuine cold-weather volume: one face soft, dark and heavily embroidered, the other bright, quilted and densely illustrated.

Condition

• Pre-owned collector garment with natural age and material character; visually well preserved overall, particularly given the intentionally delicate KOSHO Special Edition construction.
• Black velveteen face: natural directional movement in the pile, soft creasing through the body and sleeves, minor folding and storage impressions, subtle tonal variation under light, gentle shaping through the padded body, and light dust or lint that adheres naturally to dark velveteen.
• The central Alaska Boy embroidery remains vivid, with the red-and-white lettering, fur-trimmed hood, orange suit, igloo, trees and ice in strong contrast; no large holes, severe velvet loss or major structural tears are evident in the back photograph.
• Embroidery: the dog-sled, polar-bear, lightning and Alaska Boy designs retain substantial thread coverage; minor thread movement, loosened ends or vintage-style irregularities may be present within the dense work.
• Red-and-gold quilted face: natural wrinkling and rippling, quilting compression, light tonal movement, possible small age-related marks or surface variations, gentle softening from wear and storage, and changes in sheen with the light; the map, banner, landmass, wildlife and travel illustrations retain good visual presence.
• Wool ribbing: soft surface fuzzing, gentle waviness, possible light tonal aging, relaxation from previous wear and minor variation at the cuffs and waistband.
• No obvious large tears, seam failures or major missing sections are visible in the full-garment photographs; smaller marks, minor thread pulls, spot discoloration, rib irregularities or handling wear may be present.
• This is a delicate collector jacket rather than rugged daily workwear; colors may vary slightly with the reflective direction of the velveteen and acetate.

KOSHO Construction

Tailor Toyo’s KOSHO Special Edition series was created to reproduce early souvenir-jacket construction with close attention to historic materials, dye behavior, rib knitting, filling and zipper architecture. Archival documentation explains that its fabrics were deliberately woven and dyed to vulnerable vintage-style specifications, the wool ribbing was produced on old knitting machinery without modern moth-proofing, the filling is cotton batting, and the reproduction zipper was made on restored historic equipment with cotton tape, all intended to age like an original period garment.

The zipper is more delicate than a typical modern closure, as the archival retailer specifically warned: align the slider carefully and never force it if the teeth or pin do not engage at once. The cotton filling should not be compressed unnecessarily in storage and the jacket must never be treated as machine-washable; protect the wool ribbing from moths, moisture and prolonged tension, and the embroidery from jewelry, bag straps and rough surfaces.

Alaskajan Tradition

Among sukajan collectors, Alaska imagery forms a distinct category known as Alaskajan, or アラスカジャン, set apart from Japan-map, dragon and tiger designs by polar bears, dog sleds, Arctic wildlife, state flags, the aurora, Alaska maps, totem-inspired imagery, statehood lettering and mountain and glacier scenes. Tailor Toyo’s historical material explains that these designs were produced for U.S. military-base PX markets, with regional imagery drawn from photographs and postcards available to Japanese embroiderers, and describes original Alaska motifs as scarce within the vintage field.

The “49th State” wording ties the design concept to 1959 or later. TT12679 goes further than most Alaska jackets by adding the animated Alaska Boy scene and pairing embroidery with a lavish printed statehood map; “Alaska Boy” is used here as the more neutral reference, with the original archival title retained for identification.

Fit & Display

Because the jacket contains cotton filling and non-stretch velveteen, period retailers noted that it may feel approximately 1–2 cm smaller than its exterior measurements suggest. The most useful measurements are chest width armpit to armpit, back length from the base of the collar, hem width across the ribbed waistband and sleeve length from center back collar to cuff; Japanese padded sukajan have a short body, full raglan sleeves, a rounded chest and a fitted waistband, and fit closer with the velveteen face worn inside.

Displayed black side out, it becomes an embroidered Arctic scene framed by polar bears and sled dogs; red side out, a quilted illustrated statehood map. A broad padded hanger is recommended, since long-term folding may compress the filling and set creases; store away from direct sunlight, high humidity, moth activity and rough surfaces.
