The Shishigami, Princess Mononoke's Deer God of life and death, stands in ceremonial stillness on this early GBL sukajan. Preserved new with its original tag, the jacket belongs to the heavier, embroidery-forward generation of Ghibli's official apparel, a piece of quiet authority for collectors who know the difference between representation and symbolism.
The Piece
This GBL-produced sukajan takes as its subject one of the most symbolically charged figures in Studio Ghibli's visual canon: the Shishigami, the Forest Spirit or Deer God of Princess Mononoke (1997). Set against a deep black ground, the Deer God stands in poised stillness, its elongated antlers worked in branching ivory embroidery that expands outward like living architecture and radiates upward like a sacred halo. A surrounding woodland silhouette, subtle yet deliberate, places the figure in its deep-forest domain and evokes the tension between nature and intrusion that defines the film.
Above, “Princess Mononoke” rises in a raised arch of stylized script; below, “Gods in the Deep Forest” and “1997” mark the film's release and set the jacket in both narrative and time, making it a commemorative artifact. The figure is rendered in layered satin-stitch embroidery, and the composition is vertically balanced and ceremonial rather than decorative. Spatial restraint governs the design: the negative field around the figure heightens its presence, so that the Shishigami exists as both image and symbol of life, death and the fragile equilibrium between them.
The sleeves extend the visual language beyond the central figure with mask motifs and further symbolic references, carrying the composition across the whole garment. The silhouette keeps classic mid-2000s sukajan proportions, with a strong shoulder line and a slightly cropped body.
Early GBL-era releases are structurally heavier, embroidery-forward and materially richer than later streamlined runs, and this one is built closer to archival souvenir jackets than to fashion replicas: dense embroidery threads with minimal loose backing, a thick polyester satin exterior, rayon lining for sheen contrast, ribbing with structured elasticity and interior padding for winter wear.
Produced during GBL's earlier design period and now discontinued, the jacket occupies a higher echelon of Ghibli apparel. Early collaboration sukajan runs are significantly rarer than current seasonal releases, since many early models were worn heavily or stored poorly, and Princess Mononoke pieces from the initial production waves tend to command stronger secondary-market premiums than later restocks. The jacket sits where Ghibli archive collecting, early GBL production, sukajan embroidery culture and character-based luxury streetwear meet; condition, size and early release status together make it scarce.
