SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan SSJ-505 chaqueta Sukajan reversible Oiran con cerezos llorones, satén de rayón negro y dorado antiguo

A single oiran, poised and luminous against black satin, gives this SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan reversible its rare composure. Model SSJ-505, the Weeping Cherry Oiran, renders the stillness of an ukiyo-e beauty print in dense embroidery, framed by antique-gold sleeves and produced with Switch Planning.

The Piece

Produced by SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan under Switch Planning for the Japanese fashion market, the SSJ-505 avoids the crowded, highly colorful compositions of many modern sukajan. A single figure occupies the back: her pale face, elaborate coiffure, radiating kanzashi hair ornaments and layered kimono cords rise quietly from the black satin, like an ukiyo-e portrait translated into thread. Crimson piping traces the shoulders and arms like a fine brushstroke, and the restrained black, gold, ivory and burgundy palette balances traditional Japanese imagery with the swagger of contemporary wagara streetwear. Hanatabi Gakudan is a Japanese casualwear label known for adapting Japanese art, symbolism and traditional visual culture into elaborately embroidered clothing, and the maker identifies this design as an oiran- and geisha-inspired composition.

The radiating kanzashi create a crown-like silhouette around the head, closely associated with the theatrical appearance of the oiran, the elite courtesans of Japan's historical pleasure districts, whose dress, unlike the comparatively restrained appearance of many geisha traditions, emphasized spectacle through ornate coiffure, layered robes and ceremonial accessories. Her kimono combines ivory floral brocade effects, black and gold patterned panels, burgundy braided cords, red collar accents and pale-gold obi details, with fine linear embroidery defining face and hair. The portrait is poised rather than theatrical, with the composure of a classical bijin-ga beauty print: the black ground lends mystery and lets the pale embroidery appear almost illuminated, the muted gold sleeves suggest luxury without overwhelming the figure, and the burgundy cords draw the eye from the face through the layered robes.

The front presents two smaller mirrored oiran portraits over the black body, each with ivory facial detailing, black coiffure, golden kanzashi, burgundy kimono cords and small red floral accents, placed above welt pockets with gold arrow-shaped trim that echoes the sleeves. Striped black-and-ivory ribbing at collar, cuffs and hem keeps the classic vocabulary of the Yokosuka souvenir jacket. The jacket is fully reversible, its alternate side originally designed in a contrasting black-and-pink colorway, lightweight and intentionally unpadded, with a reversible zipper.

Associated with the mid-2010s generation of premium Hanatabi Gakudan sukajan, model SSJ-505 appears in established Japanese archives under the Weeping Cherry Oiran name; its model designation and highly specific embroidery distinguish it from anonymous souvenir jackets and generic reproductions. The black-and-gold palette makes it unusually versatile for so ornate a sukajan, pairing with black denim or tailored trousers, wide-leg Japanese workwear, leather boots, vintage sneakers, minimalist monochrome, burgundy or olive accents and kimono-inspired layering. Displayed, the large portrait reads as embroidered textile art, especially striking in a Japanese fashion collection, tattoo studio, boutique interior, dressing room or dark-toned gallery space.
