This MA-1 bomber jacket comes from Raf Simons’ landmark Autumn/Winter 2001 collection, “Riot Riot Riot,” and encapsulates the designer’s radical interrogation of youth culture, authority and memory. Built on the foundation of the classic American flight jacket, it is transformed by a series of distressed patchwork graphics and subcultural references into a layered visual narrative that challenges traditional notions of uniformity and control. The camouflage base, set against fragmented imagery and archival prints, evokes the tension between conformity and rebellion that runs through Simons’ early work.

The patchwork collage reads like a disrupted archive of youth unrest: photocopied figures, protest fragments, punk flyers, political references, underground graphics and anonymous faces in monochrome, stitched directly into the fabric. Unlike later Raf Simons work that leans toward controlled nostalgia, the imagery here is intentionally fractured and imperfect, rejecting symmetry and coherence. On the back, a central figure becomes a focal monument, almost icon-like yet stripped of sanctity, with smaller fragments orbiting it in a constellation that refuses hierarchy.

The base structure references the USAF MA-1 intermediate flight jacket, a garment engineered for pilots in confined, high-pressure environments and defined by insulation, mobility and survival. Simons retains the structure but redirects its intention.
