Executed in two-tier guden palace form for Otani-ha Shinshu practice, this altar is domestic Buddhist architecture rather than furniture. A restrained black lacquer shell opens into a luminous gold sanctum, and its unused condition and 161 cm height make it a sanctuary for permanent placement and long ritual continuity.
The Piece
This altar is domestic Buddhist architecture, executed in a two-tier guden (palace-style) format for Otani-ha Shinshu practice. It functions as a complete interior sanctuary rather than furniture, intended for permanent placement and long-term ritual continuity.
The black lacquer exterior forms a restrained shell, while the interior opens into a luminous gold sanctum. Layered platforms, symmetrical vertical alignment and a resolved central axis mirror temple interior logic at household scale: an elevated upper sanctum aligned to the principal axis, vertical emphasis guiding focus inward and upward, and staged offering platforms for incense, light and flowers.
At approximately 161 cm in height, the altar belongs to the estate-scale domestic and temple-annex class. The upper sanctum supports the principal devotional focus, while the lower tier integrates storage and structural ballast. Construction combines wood structure, lacquer finishing, gold interior treatment, relief ornamentation and metal fittings at structural and visual nodes; because of this architectural fragility, professional crating and cargo-grade logistics are required.
It suits stewards seeking a complete, uncompromised Shinshu domestic sanctuary. Unused and at full height, it can serve as a generational anchor, an interior sacred structure able to absorb ritual life over decades without aesthetic or structural compromise.

Freight & Crating
Because of its height, mass and architectural fragility, the altar travels by cargo or freight with professional crating rather than by standard parcel services such as EMS or express couriers. Crating, reinforced packing and coordination with freight consolidators and export brokers mean delivery typically takes 6 to 10 weeks, depending on routing, carrier availability and customs clearance. Part of the expected freight cost may be reflected in the price; any difference is quoted separately once destination and handling requirements are confirmed, and a customized quotation is recommended before purchase.
- Weight estimates: net 90–120 kg; crated 160–220 kg
- Crate approx. 140 × 85 × 100 cm
- Insurance recommended at replacement value
- Estimated US landed cost (Japan transport, export crating, ocean LCL freight, port clearance and inland delivery): approx. $6,800–$9,330 USD
- HS code guidance: 9403.60 (other wooden furniture); brokers' alternates 9403.89 and 4420.10; final selection confirmed with the customs broker at shipment
