The Piece

The Keepall, the Louis Vuitton travel silhouette made for movement and departure, is the foundation. Drawn from vintage circulation, its classic Monogram canvas becomes the ground for intricate hand embroidery forming an abstracted Hong Kong flag motif. Red and white threads break the order of the monogram with bursts of red that feel almost geological, while the white bauhinia at the center anchors the composition with a symbol of political, cultural and historical resonance.

Jay Ahr is the label of Jonathan Riss, who treats vintage luxury not as something to preserve in pristine silence but as material to reinterpret. His process is deliberately labor-intensive: each bag is taken from existing vintage stock and rebuilt through embroidery that demands patience and conceptual clarity. He does not erase the Louis Vuitton identity but overlays it, so both voices exist at once. This bag comes from his archival reconstruction program and was released as part of a Farfetch-exclusive capsule.

The interior label reads “Hong Kong Flag – June 1996”, a date just before the 1997 transfer of sovereignty, adding a quiet layer of narrative to the stitching. Because each base bag differs and each embroidery is composed by hand in real time, no Jay Ahr piece aligns exactly with another; this one sits beyond limited or numbered editions as a true one of one.
