An Issey Miyake coat from Autumn/Winter 1997, made in pressed polyester felt printed with swirling blue, white and black smoke, with an A-line flare and a single corded toggle.
The Piece
The late 1990s were among Issey Miyake's most inventive years. While Pleats Please was becoming a global success, the mainline was experimenting with industrial textiles of every kind, and polyester felt, pressed rather than woven, gave his studio a cloth that could be printed edge to edge and cut without hemming.
This coat, product number IM73-FA016, is made entirely of that felt. The print reads like strands of carded wool or smoke drifting across a field of cobalt and black, and it runs uninterrupted from body to sleeves. A wide grey-black felt collar frames the face, the front closes with one large button and a cord toggle, and the body swings out into a generous A-line with curved seams and set-in pockets. The coat is lined in blue at the upper body.
Tagged L, it measures 49 cm across the shoulder and 103 cm long, falling below the knee. It is light for its size and wears well over tailoring or knitwear.
Mainline Issey Miyake outerwear from the 1990s is far scarcer than the pleated lines, and printed felt pieces in particular were made in small quantities. The surface pilling is typical of the material and does not interfere with the print or the shape; the coat remains striking from across a room.
