Two jackets and a waistcoat in one: Hermès’s Mythologies des Hommes carré on one face, plain black on the other, with sleeves that zip away, from the years when Martin Margiela dressed the house.
The Piece
Between 1997 and 2003 Martin Margiela designed Hermès womenswear, and the silk outerwear of those years, cut plainly so that the carré print does the talking, is among the most sought-after Hermès ready-to-wear today.
The print is Mythologies des Hommes, a carré of tribal masks, shields, animals and figures arranged in medallions of brown, olive, silver and gold, signed along the hem. The jacket is cut straight with a small stand collar and a centre zip; the sleeves detach at the shoulder so that it becomes a gilet, and the whole piece turns inside out to black.
Labelled size XL with a Hermès Japon composition label. Measured flat: shoulder 45.5 cm (17.9 in), chest 55 cm (21.7 in), length 75 cm (29.5 in), sleeve 60.5 cm (23.8 in).
