EVISU at its most gloriously excessive: a Japanese-made pair whose rear and side legs multiply into patch pockets, each a small canvas for a Kamome in its own color, crowned by the kanji 戎 and 音. Interior labels tie it to Siotani Brothers production and the Yamane name.
The Piece
Rather than decorating an otherwise conventional five-pocket jean, this pair transforms the entire rear and side architecture of the trousers into an assemblage of additional denim pockets. White, red, yellow, pink, purple, orange and blue-white Kamome embroidery punctuates the deep indigo, while the two principal rear pockets carry the large characters 戎 and 音. It belongs to the eccentric Many Pocket, or Multi Pocket, branch of the EVISU archive vocabulary, somewhere between heritage workwear, Japanese street fashion, patched utility trousers and wearable graphic art.
Numerous patch pockets are set along the back thighs and outer legs in a dense, almost modular composition. The construction is emphasized rather than hidden: contrast stitching, visible rivets, angular placement, varying sizes, asymmetrical positioning and an individually embroidered Kamome on each. Several pockets are tilted rather than horizontal, others wrap partly around the sides, and rivets punctuate their corners like metallic dots, giving the surface an unusually three-dimensional, almost topographical quality that catches light differently across each stitched layer. Some pockets remain functional storage, others mainly add rhythm; the line between function and ornament is deliberately blurred, drawing at once on work trousers, carpenter pants, military utility wear, cargo trousers, motorcycle clothing and Japanese workwear.
Of the two main rear pockets, one carries 戎, a character strongly associated with the naming language of EVISU and Ebisu; the other carries 音, meaning sound. Rendered in white and green embroidery, the oversized characters form a bold typographic centerpiece above the field of Kamome pockets, lending the rear the look of a Japanese work jacket translated into trousers. The Kamome themselves appear in white and pale blue, bright red, yellow, pink, purple, orange and rust, with green accents, so that each small pocket becomes its own EVISU badge; from a distance the silhouette reads as unusual utility denim, and up close the marks reveal themselves one after another.
The front is surprisingly quiet: traditional front pockets, coin pocket, button fly, belt loops, copper-tone rivets, contrast stitching and a fairly clean central leg, with only the side pockets and glimpses of colored embroidery hinting at the back. At the rear waistband sits an unusual metallic gold-toned leather-style patch reading EVISU Paris with further decorative lettering and graphics, linking the piece to the more fashion-oriented, international side of the EVISU universe while the interior labels establish Japanese manufacture. The denim is extremely dark and richly saturated, a midnight-blue ground against which every pocket, rivet and colored motif stands sharply apart; as it fades around seams and pocket edges, the architecture should become even more pronounced.
The late-1990s and 2000s spirit is unmistakable, an era when Japanese brands treated denim as a platform for identity: larger logos, stranger silhouettes, more elaborate embroidery and multiplying utility details. Rooted in vintage American jeans and workwear, executed within Osaka denim culture and later absorbed into international street fashion, EVISU's three identities all appear here: heritage denim from the front, utility streetwear from the side, Japanese pop-art jeans from behind.
