Cropped Heads transplants the souvenir-jacket idiom onto a collared black cotton corduroy jacket: a cracked skull, coiling serpent, fiery chrysanthemums and a spider web erupt across the back beneath flowing “Japan” script. It reads less like decorated clothing than tattoo flash translated onto a wearable black canvas.
The Piece
Unlike a conventional rayon satin sukajan, this jacket is built on a substantial black cotton corduroy body, a Western-style collared zip jacket carrying the visual language of Japanese souvenir wear. Where satin gives shimmer and movement, corduroy brings density, texture, matte depth, workwear character, winter weight and a darker rock-and-roll atmosphere; its raised and recessed ridges absorb light unevenly, so even a nearly all-black garment shows subtle tonal variation, and the embroidery appears almost illuminated against it. The fabric also gives more structure than most rayon sukajan.
The back is the centerpiece. Flowing cursive “Japan” sits at the top, and the artwork builds downward through interlocking images in silver, turquoise, orange, pink, green and black. A white spider web occupies the upper-right corner. A brightly colored snake, in turquoise blue, dusty pink, black, white and red, emerges from behind the flowers with jaws wide open, fangs exposed and a long forked tongue, its body curling down through a large cracked human skull before vanishing into smoky turquoise outlines and chrysanthemums. The skull, worked mainly in pale gray and white thread, shows deep black eye sockets, visible cranial cracks, strongly defined cheekbones, individually articulated teeth and heavy dark outlining, deliberately weathered rather than cartoonishly clean. The asymmetric, overlapping arrangement feels like a tattoo composed organically across the body.
Large chrysanthemums in orange and burnt red surround skull and snake. The kiku (菊) is among Japan’s most culturally important floral motifs in textiles, tattoo and decorative arts; here it behaves like a tattoo filler, framing the central images and keeping the palette from turning monochrome. In Japanese visual culture and tattoo imagery the snake suggests transformation, danger, regeneration and supernatural force, and its twisting body counters the hard geometry of the skull. The result draws on irezumi-inspired composition, where animals, flowers, smoke and water build movement together, mixed with Western skull-and-snake flash; it is not a reproduction of a specific traditional tattoo design, and its hybridity is the point.
The front is surprisingly restrained: two embroidered skulls sit symmetrically across the chest, kept mainly silver-gray and black, so the jacket moves from minimal and wearable at the front to complex and confrontational at the back. Inside, a black diamond-quilted lining adds insulation, structure, smoother layering and a fuller silhouette while keeping the interior as dark as the shell. From across a room the back reads as a dramatic skull; up close it fragments into snake scales, petals, smoke-like outlines, embroidered cracks and spider-web geometry.
Cropped Heads is well established within Japan’s graphic Americana and embroidered clothing scene, producing sukajan, tattoo-inspired shirts and jackets with dragons, tigers, skulls, Buddhist figures, mythological subjects, traditional florals and CROWS collaborations. This collared corduroy piece is far less common than the brand’s standard sukajan, sitting between Japanese Americana, tattoo culture, rockabilly, biker fashion and Y2K archive streetwear.

Styling Notes
Because the jacket already carries considerable detail, uncomplicated styling keeps the embroidery in focus: black jeans, engineer boots and a plain white T-shirt for Japanese rockabilly; black denim, leather boots and minimal accessories for a biker look; wide trousers, vintage sneakers and silver jewelry for an archive feel; black trousers, rings and a simple inner layer for tattoo-inspired streetwear; or raw denim and classic boots for Americana. Japanese sizing often differs from Western sizing, so garment measurements should take priority over the letter size.
