The 1990s Chanel shield sunglasses that define the era: model 01456 in black, with the house's leather-threaded gold chain running across the brow and looping behind as a cord.
The Piece
Under Karl Lagerfeld in the early 1990s Chanel turned its 2.55 chain into an accessory for everything, and the chain sunglasses, worn on the runway and photographed on the supermodels of the day, became the most recognisable eyewear the house ever produced. Original pairs from the period are scarce and fiercely collected.
Model 01456 has a single black shield lens with a flat brow bar. A gold-tone chain threaded with black leather runs across the front and continues behind the head as a neck cord. The wide black temples carry a gold CC logo on each side, with CHANEL and the CE mark, and inside are stamped Made in Italy 01456 94305.
The lens measures about 6.8 by 4.5 cm on each side and the temples 11.5 cm. They sit wide and dramatic on the face, as intended.
Supplied with a Chanel box, they are wearable vintage and a true piece of 1990s fashion history.
