The Piece

Long before gem-set sports watches became fixtures of modern luxury, Audemars Piguet was making watches whose architecture belonged as naturally in a jewelry salon as in a watchmaker's cabinet. The Charleston is one of those designs. Rather than ornamenting the perimeter of a conventional watch, it integrates diamonds into virtually the entire visible architecture: the rectangular white-gold case, the articulated bracelet and its stepped geometric links form a continuous piece of jewelry across the wrist, and white gold becomes almost secondary to light.

Rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds travel from the bracelet into the sharply stepped shoulders around the case. The diamonds are worked into the layered geometry rather than paved across a flat surface, so individual sections catch light differently as the wrist moves, a narrower, more formal and almost architectural effect than contemporary pavé sports watches. The design works vertically, recalling an Art Deco bracelet, and shows Audemars Piguet as both watchmaker and jeweler, without the octagonal sports-watch silhouette.

Inside, the geometric vocabulary continues. A white field carries elongated black Roman numerals around a rectangular pavé diamond center, black hands float above it, and the applied AP emblem sits at twelve. The palette is limited, white, black, diamond and white gold, yet the visual texture is enormous, and the diamonds frame the dial without erasing its ability to function as a watch.

The case is exceptionally slender, measured at approximately 14.4mm across, yet the watch weighs an impressive 95.3g, a decidedly luxurious physical presence for so narrow a piece. A quartz movement keeps the case slim and unobtrusive, leaving most of the visual and physical mass to the gold and diamond architecture.
