A complete Pure Land triad, ready for the altar: a tall standing Amida Buddha in gilt carved wood, flanked by the lineage teachers Zendo Shonin and Hosen Shonin. Together the three figures hold vow, refuge and transmission in a single coherent set, turning a butsudan or sanctuary shelf into a statement of doctrinal continuity.
The Piece
At the center stands Amida Buddha (Amitabha), the Buddha of Infinite Light and the object of Pure Land devotion, embodying vow, refuge and compassionate saving power. The figure rises with a halo-like mandorla above a lotus base, symbol of purity and awakening, the Buddha standing unstained by the world. The surface reads as gold-toned gilding, with polychrome accents visible in the lotus pedestal.
The two flanking figures are lineage teachers associated with the Pure Land tradition in Japan, Zendo Shonin and Hosen Shonin, placed as attendants to express transmission and doctrinal clarity. At approximately 30 cm each they are not miniature helpers but fully legible figures that hold their own presence beside the central Buddha.
A triad is ritual architecture made portable, a structured devotional set that establishes center, support and transmission. Pure Land devotion is not only personal sentiment but a disciplined tradition carried by teachers, commentaries and communal practice; pairing Amida with lineage figures frames devotion as both refuge and continuity across generations. In household sanctuaries and diaspora settings, such a set preserves hierarchy, focus and lineage memory in one place, and as a complete altar-ready ensemble it immediately completes a butsudan or sanctuary shelf.
