Kokūzō Bosatsu

Kokūzō (虚空蔵), whose name means storehouse of the void, is the bodhisattva of wisdom and merit as boundless as space. In Japan he is above all the bodhisattva of memory and learning, closely bound to the young Kūkai.

The memory rite

Legend tells that the young Kūkai, while still a wandering ascetic, practised a rite to Kokūzō by reciting a mantra a million times in a cave on Cape Muroto in Shikoku, and gained a perfect memory. This rite, gumonjihō, remains a demanding esoteric practice.

Identifying Kokūzō

Kokūzō is a crowned bodhisattva, usually seated, holding a sword of wisdom in the right hand and a wish-granting jewel in the left. The sword can cause confusion with Monju, but Monju holds a sutra rather than a jewel and rides a lion.

The Five Great Kokūzō

Esoteric Buddhism also honours five Kokūzō together, each of a different colour and seated on a different animal. The set at Jingoji in Kyoto, from the ninth century, is the classic example.

Thirteen-year-olds

In Kyoto, children of thirteen visit Hōrinji in Arashiyama in spring to receive wisdom from Kokūzō, a custom called jūsan mairi. Kokūzō is also honoured as the protective deity of people born in the years of the ox and the tiger.

Collecting notes

  • Kokūzō figures are uncommon. Paintings and small protective images for those born in the ox and tiger years are the usual forms.
  • Without its jewel, a Kokūzō can be hard to identify. Look at the hand position for the missing attribute.
